Here's a quick summary:

1) The problem

- we had made a flight redemption for 2 seats (25000x2 miles) and an amount of cash for the taxes etc.
- we had our infant son (lap traveler) on the reservation
- son presented with onset of illness the night before departure, and was declared unfit to fly on the morning of departure (about 6 hours before departure) by a physician
- I called and cancelled our itinerary
- I submitted a cancellation claim for the miles and cash expenditures
- I was reimbursed only the cash, not the miles [note: this is policy as I was educated after the fact]
- Aeroplan's mileage refund requirement is a cancellation >= 22 days before departure (obviously not eligible here)
- So I was out 50K miles with seemingly no recourse

2) The solution as suggested by canadiancow:

- Call Aeroplan and change the cancelled itinerary to any dates as long as the departure is >= 22 days away (but <= original booking date + 1 year per flight credit rules) in order to restore eligibility for a mileage refund
- The fee (non Diamond) for this was $100 per direction (2) per passenger (2, infant not included) = $400 + HST. There was also a slight difference in the taxes (higher) since the new itin had different airports involved.
- Call Aeroplan and cancel the new itinerary and pay the mileage reinstatement fee
- The fee (non Diamond) for this was $150 per person = $300 + HST
- Submit claim for all above fees (400 + 300 + add'l taxes + HST)
- Rejoice when receive cheque

Note that I verified with Allianz (who themselves verified with TD behind the scenes) that all expenses were covered prior to incurring them. I was dealing with a wonderful lady in the appeals department directly, which helped immensely since she was a single point of contact who understood my file.

Anyway, thanks again to canadiancow for the help.
And thanks to you as well for summarizing things so nicely. A post I will definitely keep in the event I could use it in the future.

Great to hear the positive outcome for you. As I see, you paid for the Aeroplan taxes/fees with your TD Aeroplan Visa, correct?

General question to the forum. Do you still get this coverage if you do NOT pay with the card? I believe I've read before that you do NOT need to pay with the TD Aeroplan Visa to get the other benefits, such as priority check in/boarding, MLL access and free bag, as long as you have an Aeroplan booking on AC metal. But what about these flight-related and baggage insurance coverages. Do you still get them if you did NOT pay for the award fees with the TD Aeroplan Visa?

The answer is unfortunately no . As per the documents for this card "
  • TheTrip Cancellation Coverage Period begins on the date the Covered Trip is booked or reserved with the Travel agent or other travel supplier and the full cost of the Covered Trip has been charged to Your Account using a TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card and/or Your Aeroplan Miles.

Has anyone had any good experiences with the infinite privilege concierge??

I have about 30 back and forth emails, and they have been frustrating. Wrong dates, wrong restaurants, always a different person unaware of what's happened before them trying to involve themselves.

Amex plat concierge was wayyyy better.

I emailed and asked them to make a reservation at a restaurant for me in Japan. They emailed back saying they didn't know Japanese so I should get someone who speaks Japanese to do the reservation for me.

Fair... I guess.

They are useless. I tried to use them to find a tour to the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas and they were totally lost on what to do. It's easier to simply Google.

Agreed 100%.

lounge access with TD Visa Infinite

Hey, the Maple Leaf Lounge website says that holders of a TD Visa Infinite card can access the lounge paying 30-40 dollars. I was not aware of that. Has any of you tried?

i knew you could get one complimentary access a year with an aeroplan reward ticket but I did not know you could add more access if you paid.

thanks

maxime

Not really fair, that is their whole raison d'etre. FWIW, the only competent person helping with Tokyo reservations for me was their "tokyo specialist" so to say they cannot speak Japanese is ridiculous.
Also, several of the resos were made in fact by the hotel, the concierge serving as a middle man. We stay at hotels with pretty good concierges, so I think this makes the visa infinite privilege concierge look better.

From my experience,, the visa infinite card doesn't have lounge perks. Paying 30-40 dollars to enter is not a perk, and its the same price or even cheaper to get in on a flex ticket.
The infinite privilege card however does have specific lounge benefits. 6 Priority passes to share between the primary card holder and any supplementary holders (do not get an additional 6 passes with supplementary cards as I thought), and a couple of times a year, when using an aeroplan redemption ticket in non-J cabin, you can enter the lounge for free.

I'm putting the priority pass access to the test in Narita airport next month, and hope it permits access to a sweet lounge. Looks like in Terminal 1, its the T.E.I. lounge and IASS lounge.

Not sure if you're aware, but those two lounges are landside.

Hahahahaha. That’s AMAZING. best excuse for not doing their job I’ve ever heard yet.

“Could you book me a restaurant in Toronto please”
”We’re sorry sir, but for the security of your account we can only book a restaurant within 10 km of your registered mailing address.”

Ya I read those lounges were landside and hope that there is another PP lounge after security. Does anyone know. I'm flying PY not J, so need to rely on priority pass or Amex for NRT lounge after security.
