Yes, you seem to have calculated correctly.
As for routes, you could look for TYO-TPE/TSA-ICN or TYO-KHH-ICN. It is a lovely detour, but can be bit hard to find decent priced *A flights all the way. Depending on the mindset of your fiancée and/or you, getting the Hello Kitty BR flight could be a blast (and helping you avoid the discussion 'why are we flying 3,5 hours in the wrong direction?!')
TYO-HKG-ICN also comes to mind as a good detour in that neighbourhood.

NRT-PVG-PEK-ICN on CA in H and U fare would give around 2k miles and costs about the same as the OZ non-stop.

Unfortunately, we are flying for a business trip so will have to stick with non-stops, as we are on a time schedule.
New plan for the Japan to Korea part is to fly out of Osaka to Seoul after spending a few days in Kyoto. Looks like most direct route is KIX-GMP on Asiana (at least on flights which qualify w/ Aegean), which would provide another ~780 miles. Add a domestic flight home from CA at the end of our trip, and that adds another ~1500 miles.
So all told, looking at 17,105 miles for this trip, which still leaves us quite a bit short of 20k Gold status, especially given that we rarely fly United.
Given this, are there better uses for the miles? And since only one of us needs the Star Alliance gold (since we travel together), what would you guys recommend for allocating her miles? Anything else I'm missing?

Do the first 1000 miles (awarded for signing up for the program) count toward status if the account is older than 1 year?

Also, has anyone had experience putting an Indian address down as the mailing address? Any reason this shouldn't work?

My guess is that an Indian residing in India most probably will have done it. And why should it not work? Have you noticed anything in the T&C suggesting racial discrimination?

Some programs (like UA) have different rules based on country - but you're right that there's nothing in the T&C to indicate this.

It shall be made clear that: (a) If the Basic Member has not collected 4,000 Miles within a period of twelve consecutive (12) months from the date of the first valid flight that registered miles), then the accrued Miles shall not be automatically reset, but shall rather be successively deleted, once one (1) year elapses from each flight event, effected within the said 12-month period. To this end, the Account shall continue to exist until zero Miles exist, except for the initial Welcome Miles (1.000 Bonus Award & Tier Miles, granted upon the online registration). (b) The twelve-month period for the accumulation of the 4,000 Miles will count from the date of the first valid flight that registered miles. However, new Members shall have the right to retroactively have flight Miles credited to their Account for a period up to six (6) months prior to their registration, provided they send the required documents (ticket coupons, boarding passes etc.) to the Miles&Bonus department in support of their claim.
