I am not so sure that there was any miscalculation.. They have an schedule and all the data available to them for an "easy" quantification of how many passengers would have access to FL on average for any given time of the day. If they couldn't do that, then AA's data analytics people are really amateurish.
I think AA clearly knew it was going to be over-crowded but decided to go ahead anyways because they think it'll make the elites and business travelers happier overall. They are betting that a bit of displeasure of the Fs and Emeralds at JFK will be more than offset by the happier feelings of the Js and Sapphire travelers.

I agree. There is no way this took AA by surprise. From the minute they announced the change, I and almost any other experienced user of the FLs could easily have predicted this debacle. Perhaps they were under pressure to improve amenities for J pax (at least on paper) and went with the most expedient option.
My wife and I are traveling in paid F to Europe in a month and we chose BA over AA because (1) with all the equipment swaps you can never be sure you'll actually get F on the day of the flight with AA, and (2) we avoid the AA lounge mess. (Yes, I know BA and AA split revenues but choosing one over the other must count for something.)

If you're on a deep discount F fare that was booked well in advance, then schedule changes are a possibility, but I don't think they often swap out to a flight with no F at the last minute. In either case, you'd most likely be able to be re-accommodated on BA.

As an FC flyer I'd rate the JFK CCR over the T8 FL, even with FFD. The only plus to AA ex-JFK is that Flagship Check-In does separate Emeralds from paid F, something that BA does not.

AA FL Chicago Progress
An article in the Chicago Business Journal talks mostly about the UA lounge, but at the end, adds this...
"Meanwhile, American Airlines (NASDAQ: AAL) is ahead of schedule in construction of a 17,000-square-foot Flagship Lounge for its international premium cabin passengers at O'Hare. That facility could be completed and open as soon as September of this year. An AA spokeswoman said the airline did extensive "modeling" ahead of the build-out to ensure the lounge can comfortably accommodate all the ticketed premium cabin passengers expected to use the facility during peak departure times."
Probably the most credible update we have had about the ORD FL.

What about ticketed OneWorld Emerald? Add to the quantity.

Pro Tip: The Fast Track security line in T7 can be quite lengthy. However, in F, you can be escorted to the front of the line. If it's not offered at check-in then ask. The person checking you in will walk around, escort you across the line to the BP checker, job done.
