Did this mean that the bonus EQM for buying full fare Y did not get doubled last year? Anyone have any proof?

To date, UA's boni (EQM or RDM) have always been addititive, never multiplicative. The proof is in the terms and conditions.

(i.e. you buy full fare Y to go SFO-LAX roundtrip. 1,000 actual miles but 1,500 EQMs would normally post to your account. Under 2006 DEQM would you have gotten 1,500 extra EQMs or 1,000 extra EQMs?

You would have received 2,500 EQM for the trip.

I didn't use a search engine, just quick fingers and brute force changing the number in the URL. I only did it for about 5 minutes just to see what examples I could come up with for that post. Nothing earth shattering, I didn't find any other besides Accenture and Boeing, there certainly could be more.

I'm just going to say it...

<flame suit on>

It looks like no promo, and that makes me sad.

There are many who will say, just fly more. Others will say if I need the promo to hit 1K, then I don't deserve to be a 1K. A select few will say good riddance. Most will agree that the past is not necessarily a predictor of the future; so what if they did it 5 times in a row, what does that mean for us now?

I understand all of it. UA's a business, and they make their business decisions for business reasons. It's entirely understandable why they wouldn't have the promo this year.

But it still feels like a let down, and it will be so, so sad to let go of 1K. It's been a good run. But there's no way I can keep it going.

Bye, bye 1K. It's been good knowing you! :(

Well, I'm not saying "good riddance" but I am saying: FLY

tripelite Oct 16, 2007 4:37 pm

If they're not doing it, it would be nice if someone "in the know" would post and say why. Even "we wanted to see how it would affect Elite numbers and revenue" would be good enough for me... now I just have to figure out how to get that final 5K miles to hit 1K without missing work, without missing a weekend day, without spending another yet night in a hotel, and without getting sick... I think a redeye and a 6am return are in my future :o

As someone who earns his status through pure BIS, this is no big deal to me. Maybe UA is not doing the promo in order to shrink the elite ranks and ease the demand on the new F/C seating configurations since they are reducing seat count.

Unconfirmed (and now locked) thread says no go, sounds plausible:

I'm ending this year at around 60K EQMs, and I don't have the time to fly the miles needed to requalify for 1K this year. So, I think I'll be flying a lot next year. Thank god I have a ton of those $100 off Ecerts. :D

mahasamatman Oct 16, 2007 5:19 pm

While I'm ambivalent on this particular promo, I am glad to see United mixing it up a bit and keeping us on our toes. It gets a bit boring seeing the same promos year in and year out.

Well, Im booked to about 95K-96K EQM on both AA and UA by December 1. I have 1 business trip, NYC-SAN planned but not booked for the first week in December and a second shorter business trip being planed now for early December and my wife and I are planning a long weekend in London in December but not booked yet. So I should be in good shape barring unforseen circumstances. Although it is a lot of flying in the last couple months of the year, mostly on UA.

Oct 3-7 - JFK-ZRH-JFK - AA
Oct 13-17 - LGA-ORD-NRT-ORD-IAD - UA
Oct 19 - IAD-LGA - UA
Oct 20-21 - LGA-DFW-SEA-DFW-LGA - AA
Oct 23-28 - LGA-DFW-SAN-DFW-LGA - AA
Nov 3-5 - LGA-IAD-SAN- UA - A fare
Nov 22-24 - LGA-ORD-LHR-ORD-LGA - Z fare sale UA
Dec 1 - LGA-IAD-SAN-IAD-LGA - UA A fare

Seems like it would be a simple hack to create a quick customized URL scanner that would auto-increment the target 5-digit number in the URL examples above, and spit out the page <title> from the HTML of each of the pages to quickly scan for site content.

Sorry to head further off topic here, but in the interest of a quick followup to my suggestion above:

It is easy to make this hack, thanks to a Google Docs spreadsheet I just created.

http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?k...ARyeJNf569JOOQ . This google link only lets you view the spreadsheet example, but not edit any of the cells to change the query range. If anyone wants "shared" access to the spreadsheet (so you can edit or see the query), PM me.

This quickly scans 50 URLs at a time on United's website, returning the text from the <TITLE> tag in the HTML. This lets you get a quick look at the likely page contents of 50 pages at a time, might help you find something you're looking for on the site without necessarily searching Google.

Mods, if my little hackery belongs in a different forum, please move as appropriate (Travel Tech? Omni?). I think it fits here within the topic of people mining united.com for information on promos as expressed on this thread (or seeking historical info still posted there).

edit: seems the CMS has different kinds of URLs. There's http://www.united.com/page/article/0,6722,50431,00.html for articles (just regular static page content) and http://www.united.com/link/0,6746,58025,00.html for "links" that lead to deeper information. I can easily mine the "articles", but getting google spreadsheet queries to follow the "link" URL (to find the real gold) is what I'm working on now. This is far enough off topic for this thread, this will be the last edit of this post and the last post here on this topic. If anyone is interested in mining the site in the ways I am experimenting with, PM me.

I also called Mileage Plus this afternoon, and I was told by the rep that they were informed by WHQ that United will NOT offer the Double EQM promo this year. IMHO, United thinks its new C&F products will bring high paying customers, but I am not sure that this will in fact occur. United's product is already behind NH and SQs who are some of the top end competitors. The first rule of marketing is that it is always better to keep your existing customers. The reduction in elites might encourage flyers to try other airlines.

Before the Double EQM promo occured, United once offered flyers a promo that allowed them to apply their EQMs and flights during January through March to apply as an extension for the previous years's EQM totals. I wonder if something like this might be offered? Another option might be to pay a fee to retain one's status as American offers as an option.

LilZeppelin Oct 16, 2007 6:08 pm

maybe they are running business class sales, like the ones to Europe and now to Asia, in lieu of promotion?

SF1K Oct 16, 2007 7:21 pm

I for one will be happy if they don't offer it. Maybe a few years without it and 1K can mean something a little more again. I'll end the year with 150K EQM and never liked the fact that someone could get to it so much more easily by just paying a few hundred dollars at the end of the year.

Also it may be a good sign that UA doesn't feel it needs this revenue. Good for them!! ^

Peace2Peep Oct 16, 2007 7:59 pm

Wow! This is a serious move by UA...I'll be watching this next year in earnest to see who jumps ship!
