I wonder if this is just a .bomb outage or if the airports are down as well. Guess I'll be tuning into WGN this evening to find out!

Has anyone had any luck if they just keep trying (I am only trying to checkin and scoop up the first row of the CRJ before someone esle does)?

I had partial success with what I wanted to do. I went to a foreign, but English seaking United website and was able to pull up my itineraries and change my seat assignment. The foreign sites don't appear to let you check-in on line, but you can review your itineraries. I bet you can also check flight availability and request upgrades.
