From FT Glossary
http://www.flyertalk.com/glossary/?letter_start=B
BIS: Butt in Seat. Butt-In-Seat Miles refers to miles that you actually fly in a seat on a given trip, compared to miles that you earn for flying with added elite bonuses, promotions, or other various modifiers to the flight mileage.
Although on United , the 500 mile minimum applies even for BIS (use to be for all, now for just elites)

UA Million BIS Miler in early 2009
Was in E+ when I passed the threshold. Planned on upgrading the BOS flight from ORD when the event was to take place, but I realized E+ was wide open. So, since I earned most of those back breaking BIS miles in E+, I figured it was appropriate to pass the marker sitting in E+. I at least had a whole row to myself.

I crossed 1 million on 4/30 on UA891 LAX-NRT. Sat in seat 7K on the upper deck. It was also my first flight in the new C seats and I loved it!

I think I crossed on a Cathay Pacific flight from HKG to SIN in March. My UA flight canceled and they put me on Cathay but gave me the UA miles. I think it counted. If not, on SIN-HKG a day and a half later.

UA 936 IAD to ZRH on 5/4/09, my first time in the new C cabin.
The captain signed my boarding pass and gave me a 767 description card.
The e-mail and systemwides arrived about 10 days later.
Waiting to see what the CO arrival in *A means for the next million miles as a UA NYC orphan....

I passed the 1MM a long while back. I am not running for 1K anymore.
I hardly ever choose United nowadays. I pick which ever Star Alliance airline best suits my travel via Zurich, Frankfurt, Munich or Vienna.
