2) The only possible reason is that I once did this, and it appeared to trigger the waitlist to run, but obviously without me on it. However, I have also had other experiences since then in which it didn't run when I cancelled request. So I would go ahead and just do it.

Thanks! Website was giving me trouble so found a minute to call and the agent was able to see what I was talking about and take care of it in under 3 minutes. No idea why both the chat agent and the "supervisor" both claimed it wasn't real space but glad a phone agent was able to sort it out

Bit of a dilemma. Waitlisted with 20 PP for SFO - RDU direct later this week. It's showing PZ1 on UA.com and if you search for PlusPoint availability it also validates it's available. Still sitting on the WL so I messaged into United via the app and specifically cited the PZ1 showing on UA.com, they both claimed it was phantom space but a couple hours later it is still showing up.

Two questions:

1) Is it possible that it is in fact phantom space (I've never encountered phantom PZ space on a direct flight)?

2) If it's likely to be legitimate space, any reason not to cancel my PP request and just immediately re-request to snag the PZ1?

This bug has been there for more than 10 years.

Clearing PZ is not dynamic. I would cancel the upgrade request and apply PP again.

Don't bother talking to agents.

I have been doing this for as long as I can remember.

Upgrade priority using points plus

Hi,
I’m a 1MM, Star Gold (UA) and have booked a trip to IAH-TLV leaving tomorrow.
My friend, who is a 1K, offered to use his PP points to upgrade me. Those have been applied a month back.
Since yesterday I’ve been closely watching upgrade list and see that’s I’m relatively low on the list, without any realistic UG chance.

So my question is - if my 1K friend uses his points to upgrade me (a Gold member), in terms of priority where Will I be positioned ?

hope the question is clear

Your status will be used to determine the position on the waitlist.

I made a few changes to a ticket, and in the process I have 40 extra PP that were not refunded, but another 40 were taken out to process the new upgrade. Should I be worried? Will they probably be returned after my flight? Try calling in? Would the elite desk or MP Service center be best?

Based on my last experience with this a while back, no there won't be any automatic refund. Easiest thing for me is write in to mpsc after flying, ask for the 40 +P back. They handle it within a few days then. Could try before if you need the points now, and I would think they could figure it out, but it seems simplest to do after the fact I think.

Once I have applied PlusPoints, is there an easy way to see what the Cash Upgrade offer is? Or do I have to remove the PlusPoints request to see that again?

My apologies if this was covered before in this large thread. I search for "show cash" but and tried to use Google but was unable to find an answer.

Normally it still shows in the usual locations. You can force it usually by opening the seatmap and clicking on a premium seat.

When applying UA plus pts to upgrade, is it possible to see the waitlist position ONLINE (if the flight is one week later) ?

On laptop/desktop, change the date to one day before flight. Then try and view WL the way one normally does. Usually works.

Odd. For me once I have applied the PointsPlus I no longer have the Upgrade Learn More button displayed at the top of the reservation details page. And when I open the seat map and try to choose a Polaris Seat the pop-up bubble says that upgrades are available to this type of seat and upon selection it will take me to the Upgrade page to view upgrade options. After clicking to go to that page all options listed show as No Upgrade Available (Money, Miles, PointsPlus). I get the PointsPlus not being available as I have already submitted a waitlisted request, but I wanted to see how much they are offering for the cash upgrade to Polaris to see if it is a good offer. For reference, this is an international long-haul flight with multiple people on the reservation, One 1K (me) and three Silvers (my children).

Maybe I will cancel the request and see if that causes the cash upgrade offer to display again.

Well now I have another question! There’s PZ Space that just opened up on my IAH-PIT which I have PP applied as part of a larger trip where the other leg already upgraded. In the past I would have assumed the system wasn’t working and I’d call to get it manually processed. Is that still a thing? Should I just be patient and assume the computer will upgrade me?

Edit: I did call in, and the agent said there were 5 1Ks ahead of me so I’ll just let it lie, don’t want to steal an upgrade from someone else! I hate losing status :(

By "calling in to get it processed," you were always potentially going out of order, which is why some agents refused to do it.

That said, as long as PZ is open, any new request that's made will jump the entire queue regardless, so your concerns about stealing upgrades, while noble, may ultimately be for naught. The problem is, with your other leg already upgraded, you're pretty much stuck. You can't cancel and reapply without risking losing the upgrade on the other leg.

BTW, it's not that the system is "broken" -- it works exactly as it's designed. It's just that the inventory management software is independent of the upgrade processing software, and it appears that there's no notification from the one to the other.

One success, one failure this week for PlusPoints. Both using my points for my friends.
1) IAH->AMS - Successfully upgraded from PremiumPlus to Polaris. Very appreciative friend.
2) DEN->SFO - Fail, due to "You don't have enough available PlusPoints for this request". Pretty sure I have enough... United.com bug?

1.4m miles? That’s like hoarding Venezuelan or Zimbabwean currency. Spend it before its devalued (further)!
