"upgraded IAD-FRA" -- assume you mean waitlisted IAD-FRA.
If you do a cash upgrade, and the pluspoints have not been used for any other segment, such as IAH-IAD, your PlusPoints will be returned post flight (or you can go ahead and manually cancel for faster return). Any taxes charged for the PlusPoints waitlist, will be returned at the same time.

There was PZ availability on IAD-FRA so that has already cleared.

You can not cancelled a cleared PlusPoint upgrade without cancelling the flight .
If you cancel the flight, then the PlusPoints would be returned but you would have to rebook at today's price and see if the cash offer is still acceptable.

Yes, you can apply new 10 +P to EWR-SFO without affecting SFO-MEL.

Personally, I would not be so worried about losing position, as it's rare for time-of-request to be the tiebreaker. So if you want to be economical with your +P, then I think no issue to redo the whole request. However, if you think there's a chance some may expire unused, then best to just throw 10 extra +P at it.

Thanks for the response. I have 450 +P expiring 31 July . Noway I will use up all my +P expiring in July. 31 July 300 Plus points will end up unused.

I booked the tix with 1K call center & they applied the +P.
Update: I called 1K desk. had them applied 10+p EWR-SFO. . I am now #1 on WL EWR-SFO & Still # 1 on SFO-MEL.

1) find your reservation on website or App;
2) click the “upgrade cabin” button;
3) select “PlusPoints” as your upgrade option above the target flight;
4) confirm the request at the bottom.

Hi, so I’ve reached Plat for the first (and honestly, perhaps the last) time. I’m trying to plan my travel for the next year, and I want to make the best use of my PlusPoints while I have them. I also have about 250,000 miles in my arsenal to use as well, not to mention Chase UR points.

My background:

• SFO based, travel is 100% leisure
• Typically, I do one or two trips to Europe plus one or two trips to EWR, plus lots of short haul

My initial thought was to use 40 points to upgrade a Europe Y ticket to J, but now I’m wondering if I might get more bang for my buck by instead using 10 points to upgrade a PP SFO-EWR ticket to J and do that a handful of times. Then I can save the miles for the Europe tickets and have a J seat confirmed (if I ever find one.)

Is this the better strategy? Can I reasonably expect a PP -> J upgrade on SFO-EWR to clear? I’d be looking at using them on Wednesday or Thursday night red eyes and/or Sunday afternoon returns.

It is difficult to clear pluspoint upgrades generally, and especially so without top status. You will get most bang for your buck by finding confirmable space fitting your travel needs and booking that. Do not preference UA on the off-chance you can clear the upgrade (recipe for disappointment).

I called 1K desk had them apply the upgrade to EWR-SFO last night.

This morning @ 4:am YYZ time received an email from UA my WL on SFO-MEL had cleared.
I am #1 on EWR-SFO. Hopefully that will clear. I am not a fan of PE seats. I prefer Exit row in coach over PE seats.

Thanks. I'd read for months about how hard the PlusPoints have been to use, but I guess I really should temper my expectations, shouldn't I? I have a feeling I'm just going to end up throwing them onto any shorthaul I fly at the end of the year....

Well, it really depends on what you use them for. As a non-top status (1K) I've had all but but one segment I used PP on this year clear. Out of those I didn't use PP one one I paid up to first, and the other one is a B fare that should clear as a CPU into RN, but nothing happened despite F having all 20 seats empty, but I'm pretty sure it will clear just before departure or whatever. Most of the flights were mid-week, and the TATL segments all already in PP and not Economy which all helps.

So if you want to upgrade a Europe trip try finding a decent mid-week PP fare, which should increase your chances a lot, and will also make the flight bearable if you don't get the upgrade.
