Where are you on the waitlist?

Seems likely for an 1K (or Plat?)

I booked S class ticket. I am Platinum - the waitlist comes out tomorrow. Crossing my fingers!

Also, I waitlisted my wife and son for Polaris - no PZ - she is sliver member. They are currently in Premium plus (R)

You don't unless there's some computer mess-up.

Go to your account, the pluspoints section, view your current trips, and use the cancel function. When that doesn't work is when you need to call.

I guess I was asking why do I need to remove? Is there a way to tell them to do all-or-none upgrade?

No but prior to check-in, it is all or none, after check-in, UA will split PNR to clear single individuals.

... Waitlist can be seen earlier if you change the date of your device to the day of the trip or a day earlier

Will United split PNR between an adult and a child <5? Traveling with my daughter and have PP applied, but worried that they might split us and she will end up by herself in a different cabin

How do I prevent this from happening? I like to be all or none for the upgrade

Up to checkin you are safe. To be 100% sure, wait to check-in, so as until you get to the airport, and if not cleared remove the upgrade request before checking-in

There is a sticky thread for posting offers of giving away PPs that it appears that no former 1K or GS has yet to post on: Trial UA Expiring PlusPoints Giveaway Thread (Gratis Offers Only)

David

the only way to give someone points is if we know their confirmation number and therefore their itinerary?

Correct. So you'll clearly know who you're gifting to if you've got the expiring PPs.

I have had PP applied to a short domestic flight for quite a while. Flight in about 1 week.

Checking the fight today, found it was now PZ1 but my upgrade had not automatically cleared.
Cancelled the existing PP request, resubmitted the request, and cleared instantly.

The outbound PP upgrade cleared automatically several weeks ago.

Just a data point and reminder it pays to baby sit reservations.

Since there is about zero chance UA will release 4 seats for upgrade until day of departure (if that many remain), there is about zero chance you’ll get 4 seats. If UA releases an occasional PZ in the meantime, you all will be passed over if on the same PNR.

Should I split the reservation up into two separate reservations? Would my wife and one of the kids still have 1K priority or would it revert to her Gold Status?
Side question, would there be any tangible benefit of spending more money to buy a B fare ticket over my S fare? It's $450 a person more round trip.

Splitting the reservation into two pair of tickets would allow you to clear if PZx opened, where 2 <= x < 4.

I’m not sure how much it matters whether they keep your priority or not (but I don’t think they do). I don’t think it’s likely that even two upgrades will clear for a 1K on IAH-HNL nonstop on a Saturday to Friday flight. If they clear any upgrades, they’re likely to be for GS members.

The high-density 777s they use for that route have the worst J/Y ratio in the fleet, and IAH-HNL is a route people have proven willing to pay for. And even in the unlikely event that they don’t sell each seat prior to departure, they’ll find a taker during check-in.

A tangible benefit for UA? Sure, they’d appreciate the donation to their bottom line.

For you? A million times, no. Paying an extra $1800 to try to get your upgrades to clear would be lunacy. Save the $450 per person and hope that maybe you get an upgrade offer in that ballpark, in the, again, unlikely case they don’t sell out.

Do they mean 24,000 or 18,000?? I think this may not have been updated for this year's threshhold?

Speaking from experience, they mean after $18,000. So once you reach $21,000 you'll get another 20 PP. However, the caveat here is that you must have qualified for 1K the following year. So I did not get my additional PP until I reached $24,000 as I had less than 54 segments. But once I did, I got an extra 40 PP, 20 for reaching $21,000 and another 20 for reaching $24,000. If you reach 1K via 54 segments and $18,000, the first batch of PP should be deposited as soon as you reach $21,000.
