Question for the experts: 2 pax, both GS on reservation in A one way and R the return. GS plus points applied for upgrade. Is it better to split the reservation in case PN is released by increments of 1? Phone agent says it does not matter, reservation will automatically be split if PN=1. This is not what I have been told before and would prefer early choice of seats.

Thanks in advance!

As long as you don't mind the possibility of one person being upgraded and the other not, yes, you should split. The agent is incorrect -- if PN1 opens in advance of the flight, and you're #1 & #2 on the list, it will not split automatically. That would only happen at the gate.

Tiny erratum: it would only happen after check-in, including potentially at the gate.

Thanks, guys. This is what I thought. PNR is now split.

Transfer pluspoints

Wondering if anyone can help. I am trying to use pluspoints to request an upgrade on a flight. I need 30 PP, but i only have 10PP left, and I'm short 20 PP. Is it possible to transfer from a different person to my account, or is it only possible for them to request the upgrade on their account for the full amount?

A person can request an upgrade for another out of their account, but there's no transferring of PPs between accounts in the manner you'd like to.

10 PP can be used for EWR-SFO/LAX if you purchase a Premium Plus ticket.

But will it clear? :p

I have a ticket - S class unfortunately - to Asia. United offering confirmable cash upgrade to PP (WL only for PP). If I buy up, can I then waitlist to upgrade to J for 30 PP? Or will it still be 80 PP? Or will I be frozen out of any upgrade?

Reports are yes, although UA may alter this at any time. I seriously doubt it’s intentional.

Ignore it entirely. If there is PZ space on the longhaul flight, your PlusPoints will clear when you apply them, even if you see PZ0 when combined with a short-haul flight.

Think I messed up last night. I am still < 24 hours of booking.

Found EWR FRA PZ7. Snagged two for wife and I. Currently sitting at PZ5. When I checked ORD EWR FRA (same flight) it showed PZ0. Given this, I booked separate PNR ORD EWR 24 hours before. I know Plus Points are not refundable but if I am less than 24 hours since booking would that make a difference?

Would love to get on streamlined PNR if I could :)

yes, you messed up big time. +Ps clear per segment. If it still shows PZ5 it seems like an easy fix - I’d call to amend the booking to include ORD and cancel that extra ticket

Thanks! Owe ya a beer. ^^ Got it all squared away.

One other question. For our return. If I book into ON, can I call in and ask to be upcharged to O/A/R?

Not possible. You may get an upgrade offer to Polaris though.
