If you qualify for 2024 Plat, you'll get some PPs for that trip, but you'll be waitlisted at 1K only until January 31st, then at Plat after January 31. Your chances of clearing are about zero, regardless of extended PPs or newly-earned PPs, especially since UA isn't likely to clear upgrades for a February 24 flight until after your 1K status expires.

As for extensions, pre-pandemic, some upgrade certificates were extended as long as you attained the same status in the next year. During the pandemic, UA was extending PPs. All that's gone away - UA thinks flying habits are in the new normal..

Your options beyond the expiring PPs are using newly-earned PPs, using miles to request upgrade (same instrument weight as PPs), redeeming miles for F, or just buying F. Latter two are guaranteed. Former two are far more likely to leave you in coach than in F.

We are thinking about pivoting our trip to an October time frame instead of Feb. 24. Kids have off of school first week of October so that would work. I'll be 1K still so I can use my PP. Any idea on the odds of it clearing at 1K, I'd assume fairly small also.

Is that how the timing of the Plus Points work, their status on the date of your flights as opposed to when you actually apply them for upgrades in future flights?

Say you have flights in July 2024 and you booked in December 2023 and applied them in 2023 but the Plus Points expire at the end of January 2024 so they haven't processed until July, by which time they've expired?

I'm going to have way more expire than I can use this year then. I guess 340 Plus Points is more for people who do a lot of short domestic flights around the year instead of people who take maybe one or two international flights per year then.

It doesn't work that way. You can't apply PP to a flight that's post-expiration.

IME it's become very very difficult to clear domestic flights - UA sells most of the cabin as discount P/Z fares, and then most of the remaining seats as buy-ups, leaving few or none for upgrades.

Waitlisting for both premium economy and Polaris

Is it possible to waitlist for both premium economy and Polaris upgrades with PP? If so, and the premium economy upgrade clears, does the Polaris upgrade remain waitlisted?

Yes, Yes

However, Those with paid PremPlus will have higher waitlist priority for Polaris than you regardless of status (except GS).
a Gold with paid PremPlus will be higher than a 1K with paid economy fare.

So Plus Points have been around just a few years and they've already jumped the shark?

Yep. Demand for J/F seats exceeds supply at the discount fares mentioned by Kacee and UA's not been generous in opening up PZ/PN space.

I have sponsored 7 UGs SFO-EWR from R-class in the past 3 months and 7/7 cleared. YMMV.

For 2023, my own domestic PP success rate is at around 50% or so, and I too have sponsored many relatives, friends, and associates, and quite a few upgrades cleared for them while many others did not. I also sponsored DBX-EWR for 2 persons and both cleared. I am waiting for my own LAX-NRT in June, so let’s see.

Yes, YMMV.

PlusPoints are really just more flexible Regional Premier Upgrades and Global Premier Upgrades (GPUs); GPUs were renamed System Wide Upgrades (SWUs), and RPUs were renamed Confirmed One-Region Upgrades (CR1s); and SWUs and CR1s have been around for decades.

There are a few issues at play. Passenger counts are increasing faster than available seat miles, so load factors are increasing and there is more competition for upgrades. UA isn't opening as much upgrade space in advance as they did as recently as 2019. But, most importantly, UA has learned to price F in a way that people are buying it.

In many cases, it's easier to clear PlusPoints on international routes than it is on domestic routes; intercontinental business class pricing isn't using the fixed-differential-from-economy approach that has filled those seats domestically.

I've been locked at 300 PP since early February. I apply them to all of my domestic economy bookings, and none have cleared in over three months. It's definitely worse than it was a year ago. I can't even recall last time I saw open PZ domestic.

sapguy May 8, 2023 8:32 am

I was at 400 PP at the beginning of the year, and I am now at 220 PP with 130 already applied & requested but not yet cleared!

So, the PlusPoints CAN BE USED! Just don't expect your upgrades to clear "easily" like in the good old days :D

I was finally able to find PZ for an upcoming Asia trip, sort of -- IAD-HND on the way out and NRT-GUM-HNL on the way back. I assume I'll be sitting in the Premium Plus seat (sold as Y) on HNL-SFO, though… although in a no-change-fee era, I've found myself somewhat more willing to book if I can lock in PZ in one direction or the other, since I can keep looking for a better return without penalty. That said, the process to find it, over weeks of searching, was an absolute slog compared to 2019, or even last year, when I found several options for PZ space to LHR in July, booking about a month out.

I haven't used PPs domestically, as my CPU rate has been quite good this year. (20/28 -- 71% -- counting one Y->PN after IRROPS). I have seen occasional PZ space close-in, but generally only on flights where my CPUs would clear anyway.

Re: FAQ, it says:

Q: My PlusPoints ares still valid/unexpired, but my journey starts after the PlusPoints expires. Can I use them for that journey?
A: No.

I have PP expiring 7/31/23. Does this mean they cannot be applied to flights on or after 8/1/23? Even if PZ space is available today?

If answer is yes, they can be applied to post-expiry flights, what about where PZ space is not available? Would they waitlist per normal, and then fall off on date of expiry if they hadn't cleared by then?

Correct, they cannot be applied to flights departing on or after 8/1.

No, they cannot be applied to flights departing after expiration, whether PZ is available or not.
