Earlier today SEA was completely closed. If it shows green it's probably because there is little to nothing actually attempting to come or go from there.

Found out my LAX-HNL is delayed nearly 4 hours today because the plane is having mechanical issues. Doesn't seem like a weather problem but frustrating nonetheless. Given the stresses in the system and general holiday travel, had no choice but to eat the delay. Now trying to get my 3 year-old to take a nap in the LAX UC...wish me luck!

Flights are departing now, but at a low rate. An example may help to clarify what I think is happening.
Suppose we have 100 flights, 90 are canceled and 10 are delayed by an hour each. FAA takes the total delay, 600 minutes, and divides it by the total number of flights uo get a 6 minute average dalay. Excluding cancelled flights, we get an avegage delay of an hour.

FAA only publishes ATC delays that they implement. Airlines rescheduling flights is out of their scope. This morning there were airline-specific ground stops. These were either requested from airports/ground control due to taxiway/gate congestion, or from the airline to un-clear flights that had been dispatched but had not taken off.

EWR TOWER HAD A FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM BREAK THAT CAUSED FLOODI1NG IN THE
23RD FLOOR. THE TOWER OPERATIONS WERE MOVED TO THE REMOTE SITE AT UNITED
GROUND TOWER. THIS CAUSED A SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION IN AIR TRAFFIC SERVICES
DUE TO MULTIPLE SYSTEM LIMITATIONS AND OPERATIONAL LIMITATIONS. THEREFORE A
EWR GROUND DELAY PROGRAM HAS BEEN ISSUED IN ADVISORY 086. AN EWR ARRIVAL
DELAYS MESSAGE HAS BEEN PUBLISHED IN ADVISORY 079. THE TOWER ASKS ALL
AIRCRAFT LOOKING FOR GROUND CONTROL TO USE FREQUENCY 130.4 AND FOR LOCAL
118.3. FOR FLIGHT PLAN PROCESSING PDC IS STILL OPERATIONAL. EWR GROUND STOP
HAS BEEN ISSUED DUE TO GATE ISSUES AND SURFACE CONGESTION. ROUTE STRUCTURE
FOR TOMORROW HAS BEEN ISSUED BELOW.

And you're lucky the reason for the "other" is actually published. Many times it isn't and we're like

Gate/ground congestion from last night cascading into this morning due to the planes not going out. They needed to get the first block of flights out to clear up some space for inbounds.

I acitually would chalk that up as a win. Happens 30% of the time in 70* and sunny weather. EWR taxi, tarmac, and gate congestion is a mess in normal times.
