Common airports that United doesn't serve. Flight and Connection times disappear from displays. "Operated by" is often blank on JV/Partner flights. Searches that result in red error messages seem more common. |

It actually seems to be getting worse.

In the "only cosmetic and it annoys me far more than it should" column...
I'm trying to fly CLE-EWR this afternoon on one of the NS offerings. Delayed due to "Air Traffic Control" and on the flight status pane there's the message "! Flight Delay - You are confirmed on both your original flight and a later flight in case you miss your connection. View updated reservation details". Thoroughly confusing as I have no connection and EWR is the final (only) destination in the PNR which has exactly 1 segment in it. Clicking the "View Updated Reservation Details" link just refreshes the homepage. And of course, looking at the reservation the normal way shows only the original segment with no protection segments added... (If I hadn't already talked to the reservations and ATO to see if there were any "creative" solutions to get me to Newark earlier I'd probably call just to make sure the reservation hadn't been screwed with...) |

The website is horribly dysfunctional tonight.
Trying to book SFO-KIX 1/14-1/18. .com returns the nonstop (UA35) outbound, but misprices the segments by approx. 50% ($371 for a W, $1459 for a P). And if I select the nonstop outbound, it simply will not offer the nonstop (UA34) return, despite wide open availability. This is just a disgrace. |
It is still annoying after so much time that on many (not all) of my flights, the "change flights" tab still does not work.

(I tried searching this thread for a similar issue but did not find anything).
I am trying to book SFO-MEL roundtrip. Using the ‘roundtrip’ option, the total GPU-upgradeable airfare is $1876. There is R space SFO-LAX-MEL, but no R space MEL-LAX-SFO. Using the ‘one-way’ option, the total of two GPU-upgradeable one-ways is a less number at $1808. There is R space is each direction. And, this is for the same flights that were selected during the roundtrip search…! Is this the new norm for the website to show R space only for one-ways (or only for roundtrips)? Or, is this related to the combinability and/or breaking of fares? Also, one type of search gives R space results with LONG layovers in LAX, while the other type of search gives R space results with reasonable layovers in LAX. But, my preferred timings were never fully available for combination and selection. Is the solution to call UA and have them piece together the segments that I really want – and hope that the calculated total falls in line with the other totals? |

You can price the trip with or without a fare break in LAX. This will affect R space on the segments, even if on the same flights. It is not easy to see on the UA engine which way your trip is priced, as the prices are similar depending on the combination of fares. I'm guessing the round trip used the SFO-MEL through fare and the one ways used SFO-LAX/LAX-MEL. The two one ways are cheaper because, for whatever reason, there is no YQ on the fares priced on an ex-MEL ticket. So the return MEL-SFO is cheaper than a half round trip priced on an ex-SFO ticket. It's a different fare table entirely. With dates I could probably see what the most favorable construction is. One thing that I've never understood is how married segment R availability works after booking, but you can probably poke at that with the help of a nice agent. |
Hi findark! The dates are 3/30 to 4/7. Thanks.

Okay. I'm still not sure whether married segment availability is a thing with upgrade inventory, since they will clear upgrades by segment, but I'm going to run with the theory that it is not (and possibly be corrected).
For your dates, LAX-MEL and MEL-LAX are both wide open (R9). Any method of routing a GPU eligible fare onto those flights should clear at booking, regardless of your SFO connection. The SFO-LAX connections are anything but, and the system will display your upgrade availability using the following metric:
In both cases the TPAC should clear at booking. I'm about 95% sure of this - even if I'm wrong you should be able to cancel for free within 24 hours. As I edited my above post to note, the one ways are cheaper because you can ticket ex-MEL with no YQ. This prices as SFO-MEL/MEL-LAX/LAX-SFO, which may give you different indications of R space as noted above. If you don't mind booking on separate tickets, you can do this to save a bit of money. Do not ask an agent to do this on one PNR; it will not work. But no matter your approach, and no matter which SFO connection you want, the important leg should clear into R at booking ^ |
Thanks findark for taking the time to look into this and to respond with a clear explanation. I will purchase the two one-way tickets (via a call to UA to get the exact times/flights that I want) and enjoy my lie-flat seat across the Pacific :)

Nonstop Award Calendar Back?
1 Attachment(s)
Today I came across a checkbox next to the award calendar that sorts the results to display nonstops only on the calendar. It only shows up on some searches and is really glitchy. Hopefully they improve it and get it working on all searches. Has anyone else seen this yet? Any pattern as to when it shows up?

I see it too!

It never worked before, I'm not sure why we should expect it to work now.

Operating Carrier
Is United no longer saying who the Operating Carrier is aside from its a Star Alliance partner?
