Have had that issue this morning. Had to book ORD > LAX RT for the last part of this week. Had to go to AA and just book first. Can't believe UA is unable to get their arms around such a fundamental part of their business.

Releasing seat assignment on ua.com?
 
I currently have a middle seat in the back on an upcoming flight. There is a ton of Economy Plus available but they want to charge $80, which is absurd. I'd like to release my seat assignment so I don't have a seat. Then, with any luck I'll get an E+ seat at check in. Worst case is I'll be back in a middle seat.

I am not worried about missing the flight; it's an early morning BOS-ORD and I can just take the next one if it comes to that.

How do I release my seat assignment on united.com? I tried clicking on an available E+ seat and closing the browser but it didn't work. I suppose I'd need to call?

edit: also just noticed that a first class buy-up is $130 which, while still too much, isn't as crazy as I'd have expected. I'd do it for under $100 I suppose.

Cannot get GPU applied on website

Tried repeatedly today to apply a GPU to a flight that shows R space available, but it kept erroring out on the website. Then called 1K line, agent said something was up, and put me on hold for 15 minutes and finally it was done. Agent was great, but if UA is now messing up the ability to apply upgrades online that is a big minus...of course, maybe that explains why R space was available!

Could be leftover issues with weekend maintenance. Expert mode is back and functional. I just applied 4 GPUs and they worked fine. COuld be a one-off issue.

I think it's just a IT issue. I don't think they're taking away that ability.

Has anyone had issues with upgrade requests showing in current itineraries? I have an upcoming ORD > LAX leg where I'm stuck back in steerage and applied a RPU when I booked the flight about a week ago. When I view that itinerary on the website it doesn't show the upgrade request, though it does on the app? Anyone have a similar experience?

So, I didn't mention it as I thought it was a one-off - but this talk about upgrades has got me thinking, flying back SFO-LHR last Friday although I got the "you have been added to the upgrade list" email, I always check and found that I wasn't on it. And there were only two other people on it. For this flight that is very odd and I had to be added manually. The phone agent said the same, and so did the check-in agent the next day, and there were only 5 of us on the list at or around departure time. So, something may be going on with the upgrade side of things too.

If it is not one thing it is another with this lot.

Had similiar issue with RPU -- showed the cash & mileage options but not RPU option. Call and the agent had no issue -- upgrade on PS(!) cleared immediately.

I've encountered this issue occasionally. Usually it clears itself up. One thing that always seems to indicate you have an upgrade request (even when it doesn't say so) is the seat assignments on the reservation. If there are two lines with the same segment and one has dashes, then you have an upgrade request applied. I'm still waitlisted on my SFO - PIT segment of an upcoming trip, so my seat assignments look like this:

SFO - PIT: 11D
PIT - SFO: 2B
SFO - PIT: ---

I can finally select RT search from the main page without error.

How long has it been since you ticketed and can you view the e-reciept by clicking the link from the reservation page? What about trying to have the e-receipt resent from the add email address link-does that work?

You have to call in to see if it's done. Note that for $130, it's F all the way, priority boarding (Group 1), free bags (2 x 70). So factor in the two bags if you were going to check them anyways.
