GS/Global Services is the highest tier of elite status. It is by invitation -- the invite criteria is not public but seems to require substantial annual spending with UA both in terms of absolute dollar amounts and purchasing higher fare classes (higher cpm - cents per mile). There are also reports of GS status being comped by UA Marketing to VIPs in companies who sign corporate travel deals with UA. The sole published way to qualify is to become a 4MM, having flown 4 million BIS miles on UA metal (plus additional grandfathered credits at the time of the UA/CO merger).

GS have significantly enhanced services / benefits over 1Ks. There is little said publicly by UA on GS benefits and/or qualification.

Thread on qualifying for 2016, Global Services 2016 Notifications (ONLY)

Known facts from United:

Global Services recognizes the extraordinary dedication of our top flyers. We consider a number of factors beyond the usual Premier-qualifying criteria.

We look at your travel spend on United-operated flights relative to that of other top Premier flyers over recent consecutive years.

Usually, members invited to Global Services tend to consistently purchase premium cabins or fully refundable tickets.

Known Award and Upgrade Benefits:

All benefits noted below require calling a GS agent:
  • GS can create saver economy award space (XN) if T inventory is available.
  • GS can create saver business award space (IN) if R inventory is available.
  • GS can upgrade economy awards (XN or YN) into Business First with a GPU if PN inventory is available.
  • GS can upgrade business awards (IN or JN) into Global First with a GPU if ON inventory is available.
  • GS are entitled to one saver award seat in the same class of service with their purchase of any premium fare. GS agents can open space if it is not available.
  • GS can upgrade a companion from coach to biz when flying on a paid biz fare, even if R or PN is not available.
  • GS cannot double upgrade. Economy -> PN -> ON is not allowed. *Some reports of TOD being offered at OLCI.

On Tuesday this week, driving to SFO in a driving rainstorm, my SFO IAH was delayed, and kept moving out. GS checkin agent got me on a different flight easily, and I moved from FC in a 320 to FC in a 787 with a lie flat seat. Awesome service.

I personally new 5 people who got GS last year on less than 40K spend.

It will be interesting to see how many GS people line up for my Friday flight though.
I'm one of those who received GS for 2015 on less than $40K (157K PQM/ $36K PQD). Not surprisingly, I wasn't invited back for 2016 (on 126K PQM / $33K PQD), though I did just receive a "challenge" offer (spend and fly $15K by May 2 and my GS will be reinstated until January 2017).

Any idea when the new complimentary food benefit for GS actually goes into effect? I know the announcement said it was effective yesterday, but I was on a flight from LAX-ORD yesterday and asked an FA about it and she said they had no knowledge of it.

Kind of a targeted question:

I'm traveling in Business to SJO (Costa Rica) in a week or so and was wondering if they would let me in the GFL at IAD? My itinerary is kind of whacky:

IAD-LGA (13 hour layover) EWR-SJO

Thanks in advance

Yesterday. However, distribution of information to FAs can be (very) slow / unreliable. I think this will require 1Ks and GSes to educate FAs for the time being.

As long as IAD-LGA / EWR-SJO are flown as part of the same travel segment, you are eligible to enter the GF lounge in IAD.... per the explanation given on the GS page that I access through mystatus.united.com ... see for yourself @ https://globalservices.united.com/

FA's have been giving me a free alcoholic beverage in Y for several months (5 flights to be exact), which has been a nice surprise. Now it is an official announcement.

This is a nice little perk.

Major IRROPs on 22Jan UA851 ORD-PEK. Upon landing at LAX, terrific service by the GS team there. Choice of onward flights (CA at midnight or UA makeup at 7am Sunday), hotel and food vouchers, escort to baggage claim to ensure we got our bags. File under "GS benefit." ^^

Had a flight from SLC-SFO-SNA today. The second leg got cancelled because of "air traffic control conditions".

Called GS and asked about options, and she put on a direct on Delta with a confirmed seat in first. It departed 2 hours later and arrived 2 hours earlier than my original itinerary (yeah I took the long way home)
