I am guessing a combination of needing to refuel and or recrew in SFO.
I wonder if UA sent the passengers onto OAL, but I have a feeling that they were resisting that though.

Which brings up something, does anyone have first hand experience with how UA handles some of these major cancellations?

Diverting to SFO would be crazy to refuel, so probably it's crew related.

My recent experience with rebooking was 39 out of OSL on Saturday where my wife and I were on P fares, which looked ready to cancel due to a fuel leak. Initial plan from the GS desk was the same itinerary the next day (too late for any options Saturday), but a HUACA got me an agent who booked us in BA J first thing out of OSL thru LHR that would have gotten us to ORD several hours earlier than the initial proposal. Given the dodginess of P fares in some agent's minds, this was good. At the end of the day, the chewing gum and duct tape held on the fuel line, so we took off only 3 hours late.

1/8 UA 896 SINHKG cancelled due to aircraft availability.
1/8 UA 896 HKGORD cancelled due to aircraft refueling difficulties.

1/7 UA 2078 ORDHKG looks like it returned to the gate again at 1526 and now has a new estimated departure time of 1725 and arrival into HKG at 0017 (+2). The reason for the delay is showing flight crew availability.

1/8 UA 895 HKGSIN still showing on time at 2145, but the inbound is showing as UA 2078.

honest to god. you just can't make this type of thing up.

one really has to wonder the amount of future revenue that UA gives up in a situation like this. even if i had never put up with UA's shenanigans before in my life and i was on this flight at this point, i don't think i'd be in any hurry to try UA again anytime soon...at this point, these pax were supposed to travel yesterday, which canceled...so overnighted at ORD probably in a roach motel possibly paid for on UA rupees, have since returned to the gate twice on the make up sector and will arrive roughly 36 hours late into HKG, maybe more.

even if i paid $200 for a ticket on such a flight, i'd never do it again if that was what happened to me. imagine the people paying $7K for a ticket in J. hopefully most of them just got refunds and walked over to the CX counters at ORD.

in other news, UA49 (BOM-EWR) departed 4 hours late on 1/8 no reason given on .bomb

Amazing that there are GS doing just that all the time. Has to be one of the worst bang for your buck purchases in just about any field.

so much for UAs claiming to improve operational performance ... 2014 was terrible and 2015 is off to an awful start.

Looks like 2078 (yesterday's 895) finally pushed back at 5:24PM and is in flight, estimated to arrive a mere 28 hours late. Today's 895, with its complementary diversion to SFO, keeps getting pushed back farther and farther, now 7PM due to "flight crew availability", with an overly optimistic (assuming a 28 minute turn in SFO) ultimate arrival into HKG of 4:16AM. If this were a Japanese airline, someone would have committed harakiri in an attempt to restore honor...unbelievable.

Jan 6 UA 48 (EWR BOM)

2:40 delay. UA web site says due to waiting arrival of inbound crew. Don't believe it. Plane pulled away from the gate, then went back (forgot the crew?)...

UA 44 B777 EWR to BRU on 1/7/2015, looks like this flight was delayed due to MX reasons, pushed back several hours late and then returned to gate and cancelled due to aircraft maintenance.

Subsequently, UA 45 BRU to EWR on 1/8/15 has cancelled

Two more 777's Cancelled Due to MX

I mean, really United? I believe there has been at least 1 777 cancelled per day due to aircraft maintenance. The two latest are:

UA 49 BOM - EWR B777 1/9/15 cancelled due to aircraft maintenance

UA880 NRT - HNL 1/8/2015 cancelled due to aircraft maintenance

It should be noted that UA 49 on 1/8/2015 left BOM about 3 hours late.

Perhaps a crew member became ill and they had to go back and get another one.

Sitting on UA881 now somewhere over the end of Alaska. Interesting story:

Capt come on 10 min before departure and says "Well, the company did not plan well today. We dont have our fuel yet so we will be 30 min late."

30 min later "Still working on it - we need another 70,000 lbs"

30 min later "Now we have to deice"

We left 1h 50m late. Looking on UA, it claims it was weather related. The pilot was very clear - NOT WEATHER RELATED. He has apologized many times saying the company forgot to fuel the plane. Im in the upper deck, and about 75% of us will probably miss their connections (ok, im the dumb one that did not take the non stop to hkg because i wanted the upgrade instead of sitting in Y). Looks like unless we have a miracle Ill be overnighting at NRT.
