1/2 HNL-EWR UA/14 cancelled -- but listed as "weather" (in HNL?) (yes, technically not international, but longhaul on a longhaul aircraft)
we do suffer from weather problems in honolulu - currently we are experiencing a severe cold front requiring jackets and sweaters with sub 70 temperatures all day today

on a serious note, we had high winds and rain yesterday (1/2) that was probably worse than the past few hurricaines that passed through. power outages, trees down, debris on the roads.

January 3 and this thread is already three pages long.

It's going to be another tough year.

1/3 LHR-EWR UA/16 late 2:02 -- operations
1/3 CDG-EWR UA/55 diverted BGR
1/3 MAD-EWR UA/63 late 1:29 -- ATC
1/3 HAM-EWR UA/75 diverted BGR
1/3 BCN-EWR UA/121 diverted BGR
1/3 TXL-EWR UA/125 diverted YYR (landed YYR 11:44, took off 12:34 -- impressively quick, but still unfortunate that these fuel stops have to be made at all)
Did DL or AA have any diversions coming into the East Coast today?

Neither AA CDG-JFK nor MAD-JFK on 757s stopped for fuel.

Maybe aviation fuel costs more in Europe and UA decides to rather inconvenience passengers than fill up?

Forgive me for saying this, I've followed this thread since I joined FlyerTalk and I struggle to understand why people fly United internationally - the only reason I come up with is the desire to get miles/status. They're unreliable and simply inferior in terms of comfort.

I stopped flying UA internationally in 2012 - since then it has been exclusively NZ and LH. I have trouble imagining a scenario in which I would fly UA internationally again. I can't rely on them to get me where I want to go by the time I need to be there and I absolutely don't trust them to get me there "in style", as it were.

Mods feel free to delete if you feel this post is inappropriate.

All these unplanned fuel stops...never heard of this problem before. Is this a winter thing? Seems like other airlines would be affected unless United was skimping on fuel....kinda risky given EU261 regulations on that direction.

It's not uncommon in winter to see flights from Europe, especially on 757s or on UA to make fuel stops in Canada. In fact more than one person has joked about UA's new hubs at Goose Bay and Gander due the relative frequency UA flights have visited those airports in previous winters.

Note other airlines have had to make occasional fuel stops especially with their 757s but it doesn't seem to happen as frequently vs. United.

We were on UA 39 from OSL, which was delayed 3 hours for a fuel leak. As a result our paid FC seat to ORD is now coach later this evening. In the GS lounge, the ladies were very upset with the delays/cancellations today. Apparently the PVG flight first poached 90's plane, then it canceled after an hour on the runway, so now both 86 and 90 are canceled, explaining tomorrow's 87 and 91 cancelation...a bad day in Black Rock all around.

03JAN - UA973 Diverted and then cancelled

On 03JAN BRU-ORD made it as far as the northwest tip of the UK and then turned back to LHR where the flight was then cancelled due to "operational difficulties".

I was not on the flight however I will be flying home on 973 this week and was curious to see how reliable this flight is.

1/3 IAD-LHR UA/122 late 8:55 for MX (normally 9:35am departure, actual was 6:27pm -- looks like they had to delay into the early evening because of the LHR curfew; appears to have 62 minutes of ground time to return as UA/123 on 1/4)

1/3 ORD-FRA UA/907 late 3:55 for MX (aircraft arrived early from HKG hours earlier)
1/3 ORD-LHR UA/928 late off the gate 1:37 for MX
1/3 ORD-GRU UA/845 now showing late 1:00 for MX

1/4 PVG-EWR canceled (no surprise here)

Called to re-route PVG-LAX, only few C seats left and grabbed one. The agent said that she got so many calls in past 24 hours.

A real bang up start to 2015, indeed.
