Consolidated "Delayed/Cancelled" International Flights (2015)
As we usher in 2015, the ever popular 2014 edition of 'Delayed/Cancelled' International Flights draws to a close. With that, its time to begin the 2015 edition, and true to form, UA has not disapointed in the new year:
UA 827 B777 NRT - GUM Cxld Aircraft Maintenance
UA 873 B777 GUM - NRT Cxld Aircraft Maintenance (the woes with GUM continue)
UA 184 B738 MNL to GUM Cxld -Necessary replacement of aircraft
A bunch more GUM flights cancelled as well due to aircraft maintenance.
Also cancelled today,
UA 946 IAD to AMS B763 aircraft maintenance
Tomorrow:
UA 137 (1/2/2015) GUM to NGO B738 crew availability
UA 947 (1/2/2015) AMS to IAD B763 aircraft maintenance
UA 196 (1/2/2015) GUM to NRT B738 aircraft maintenance

Howdy from UA86 EWR-PVG where the wifi is a bit spotty but better than nothing...
We were delayed one hour due to a Mechanical issue and the Inflight Entertainment System is not working in BusinessFirst. So we left a hour delayed because of this and they weren't able to fix the IFE so we're flying 15:10 Hours without IFE up front. The GS Agents in EWR said no compensation when I inquired if we'd get e-mails upon arrival.
If that's the case then I'll call the Customer Care department first thing tomorrow morning when they're open because it's unacceptable in my opinion to fly 15 hours without IFE.
I saw another FT'er on this flight so I'm curious on how UA will make things right for us.

1/1/15: UA134 EWR-ZRH - cancelled due to maintenance.
As a result, UA135 ZRH-EWR on 1/2/15 has also been cancelled.
IIRC, the same flight experienced a maintenance cancellation in the last week as well..Was looking at booking this for later this month, but not so sure now....

These delays also result in missed domestic connections which have been purchased in first or business class. The "next available" first class seat domestically could involve several days' wait due to one of these cancellations or delays. Last year, we missed nearly all of our domestic connections due to mechanical delays internationally (and I routinely allow 3-4 hours of connection time), and were seated in middle seats in E- for up to 5 hours. The difference in fare ($83!) was refunded, and the 1K desk provided compensation vouchers (when I complained--not as a proactive move). But, this is small compensation for traveling long distances at the end of an international flight in a middle E- seat!
To this end, I just booked ORD-SYD on Etihad for March travel. The fare was more than $2000 less than on United, and there were no 4-across business class, rear-facing seats to contend with. There are no 737 connections in a nonexistent first class domestic setting, and even if the flight is longer, it is still only 1 connection and flat bed seats all the way.
I am planning the same United by-pass for Munich travel in February. Turkish serves my destination in business class with over a $2000 savings over United fares. One stopover in IST is worth it to have good service and save $2,000.
You just wonder how this airline stays profitable.

If the rebooking is not suitable and doesn't have space in the cabin for which you paid, you can always request rebooking on another carrier that does.

Looks like January 1's UA79 EWR-NRT returned to the gate just after pushback and was delayed 90 min.
As a result, January 2's NRT-IAH UA6 departed 50 min late.

I was just going to make a post on how well the 747's seem to be doing operationally when I noticed this;
UA 892 ICN - SFO B747 on 1/2/2015 Cancelled due to Aircraft maintenance.

And to add that today's UA121 (BCN-EWR) takes a break in Bangor for fuel...UA125 (TXL-EWR) however is now operating nonstop for the third flight in a row - after abysmal performance in December it seems that the Jetstreams have moved south and now affect the flights to Spain instead.

It really seems that way. Anecdotal, sure, but I've flown LH long hauls a ton, and have only had one major delay with them (when an unsecured baggage container blew into the side of the aircraft on a stormy day and damaged an airspeed indicator.
This year I have had had mechanicals and cancelations on numerous long haul flights that have me seriously questioning my ability to rely upon UA to get me to where I need to be, when I need to be there. I can't take an extra day of travel, just to be sure that I arrive in time for my commitments.
