UA 973 B763 BRU - ORD cxld on 1/9/2015 aircraft maintenance -

UA 16 B757 LHR - EWR cxld on 1/9/2015 aircraft maintenance-

UA 922 B767 EWR - LHR cxld on 1/9/2015 aircraft maintenance. Looks like this flight left the gate but returned and eventually went mechanical.

The table they set up to help people was chaos - it nearly broke out into a riot. The CS agents were refusing hotels to everyone (except C and up and 1k). They were saying it was all weather related. At one point, someone yelled out - "Is there anyone here that believes this is weather related?" and EVERYONE yelled out (extremely loud) "NO" (ok...I was the one that started that...bad boy considering I got a hotel voucher in the end). People were making threats...People were going back to the gate to grab the pilot to have him admit to them it was not a weather delay. Chaos!
I have long stopped dealing with UA morons at airports. I make 1 attempt to get a voucher, if they decline I get the next 4*+ hotel (with corp rate if I can) and send UA the bill ... so far they always paid ...

So sad. When you need UA to help you out during IRROPS, not only do they refuse but they even prevent you from attempting to make a connecting flight.

UA 959 B763 LHR - ORD cancelled on 1/9/2015. according to ua.com, the reason is 'Severe Weather Conditions in our Route Network'.

So, the weather in ORD has been cold but precip free. The weather in LHR has been a bit windy but also, precip free. So, where is the severe weather? AA and DL got all there flights out of LHR on time so it cant be the winds.

My mother was supposed to be on this one (after waiting 6 hours in STL yesterday without making it to ORD and getting rebooked. Seeing the bad forecast for ORD I had called in the morning to reroute her but all we were offered was a waived change fee but not the fare difference - 600 euros. Not a useful waiver but I digress...)

She (not a super frequent flyer so take this with a grain of salt) was apparently told that the pilots of UA 946 couldn't find the aircraft registration for the plane ("a piece of paper") and therefore couldnt legally take off. In 25 years GA said theyd never seen anything like it. Aircraft had been at IAD all day per united.com so I had wondered why maintenance would be an issue. But who knows...

Wonder if they will move all the 744s back to SF for better care, not that it solves the issues with all the other types and stations. United used to be so good at irrops, it's disappointing that a pm ua hub like chicago got hamstrung by some blowing snow that was less than two inches. What happens when there's a bigger storm?

that's the general problem with flying COua to Asia now that they've abdicated their Pacific leadership role/NRT hub. ANA is not going to hold it's flights for COua's sloppy operations and scheduling unreliability.

While UA had occasional issues (mechanical, weather, diversion), the outstation overnight slack usually gave them the flexibility to hold connection banks in NRT and not destroy the schedule (i.e., a 2-3am arrival in BKK was not the best, but still enough time to turn the plane for the 7am return to NRT). Now rather than being 3 hours late, you get 12-24 delay which is absolutely unacceptable.

Best thing is figure out which airline can get you where you need to go entirely on its own metal as they will have a lot more responsibility for you should there be a mis-connect situation and may even go out of their way to make sure you make a 30 minute connection when they are running late as LH did for me this summer (>25 minutes in FRA...met and escorted off the plane, through passport control and on to the connection with 10 minutes to spare...bags made it too ).

When the leadership is from Houston, zero degrees means time to bring the network to a halt. DL operates from MSP which is one step closer to arctic hell from ORD and yet ...as you point out can function (not to mention JFK v EWR and SLC v DEN..and throw Detroit in there too).

This Continental leadership doesn't want to spend money so they just figure they'll take the day(s) off and start things up at some point in the future (sort of like cancelling school, which Chicago seriously did for 2 days...absolutely ridiculous...as the day time temps were above 0)

1/9 ORD-FRA UA/906 late 3:48, supposedly due to "severe weather in our network"

I watching a video of the people stranded in EWR from Portugal and they looked really angry.

In saying that he tried to get them onto other flights and they never went on them so..

If you have spare time...try and do the same comparison on a day here and there for DL and AA.

I now spend increasing amounts of time in the AA forum, and there's just close to zero talk of daily int'l cancellations. And we all know how good DL ops are too.
