I wonder if that makes a difference in compensation or rebooking requirements.

EDIT: I just noticed UA is ferrying an empty 777 to HKG from SFO (UA2194). I wonder if it's related...
'op difficulties' and 'MX' yield the same compensation and assistance.

Do they send them onto GUM and make them go back?
I was on UA154 yesterday, pilotsairspeed indicator went 20min prior to landing. Replacement unit would not pass testing. Pax held ON PLANE for 5 hours before food offer to deplane to stretch legs was made.

90 people were offloaded as they were bound for KWA under the guise that United has hired a "charter" plane to take them there lster in the day which was false.

We deplaned as well since we overheard airport manager mention plans of a UA rescue flight today stopping at the other islands.

Remaing folks who were destined to TKK/PNI did leave after a 6hr delay on the same broken aircraft which apparently got FAA or operations OK to go on directly to Guam, skipping the other islands yestersay. This went out as UA2062 or UA2063 (forget which #). They will have to backtrack on Monday...

Otherwise the 4 pilots would have timed out as well.

Probably, since there is a weekly Sunday night/Monday morning GUM-TKK-PNI-TKK-GUM.

Now I see UA is ferrying another empty 777 from Tokyo to HKG (UA2170). A few empty planes going TO HKG. Curious...

EDIT: Now I see a THIRD empty 777 going from Xiamen, China (XMN) to HKG. So there will be 3 empty planes there, plus 895 arriving also in a few hours.

Curiouser and curiouser...

UA 2170 NRT-HKG (N204UA) is the one that broke down in NRT the other day which caused NRTSINNRT to cancel.

8/22 UA 869 SFO-HKG (N116UA) departed at 1511 and is scheduled to arrive at 2023, 1 hour 43 minutes late due to aircraft maintenance.

8/23 UA 862 HKG-SFO (N122UA) is estimated to depart at 1314, 1 hour 44 minutes late, and arrive at 1106, 2 hours 6 minutes late due to late inbound arrival. Not sure if 1314 is a realistic estimate, but time will tell.

8/23 UA 2127 XMN-HKG (N122UA) departed at 1112, 3 hours 12 minutes late due to operational difficulties and estimated arrival into HKG is 1244. As of this post still taxiing in XMN. Can UA turn a 744 in 30 minutes in HKG?

Another one to add to this week's list:

8/20: UA 937 ZRH-IAD, diverted to SYR, arrived 2h55 late, in IAD.

Reason: Airport control or something similar; was there maybe a wx issue on THU in the WAS DC area?

Looks like 862 went out at 1510 HK time on 8/23, almost 4 hours late.

869 arrived on 8/23 at about 2010, and they held 895 to SIN for transiting passengers, so it went out at 2124 instead of scheduled 2025.

China ATC was doing heavy flow control, loaded with delays today. Par for the course for travel from China to HKG.

Yup I have heard the delays on Shanghai - Hong Kong can be horrendous.

At least 2 UA896 flights (HKG-ORD) operated today. I wonder where the other 777s they sent there have gone.

I'm wondering if they ferried the 777 (N204UA) from NRT to HKG to get it back on "pattern." Unless something has changed the pilots work ORD-HKG-SIN-NRT-SIN-HKG-ORD over the span of 10 days.

There were 2 flights today because one of the flights (UA 2068 HKG-ORD) was an extra sector created due to the cancellation of the flight the day before.

Looks like BOTH of ORD's inbound flights from China (836 from PVG and 850 from PEK) are diverting to SFO, probably for crew timeout issues. Not sure if these started out as late in-bound, mx or ATC issues as mentioned above.

I am on 896 this morning. Hopefully things are figured out.

Unbelievable, the island hopper westbound UA155 departed GUM and just landed back in GUM and cancelled.

Exactly the same mechanical failure as to the Sat. UA154 I was on, but this was on a different aircraft/tail #. (pilot airspeed indicator inop).

The poor folks who were trying to get to KSA (and some to KWA) on Saturday are still in limbo as of Monday. Two unplanned trips thru GUM immigration!

Weren't TKK/PNI pax carried on the Sunday night flight already?

And must I say WOW, UA resolved the CNMI non-tourists-can't-fly-out-court-can't-operate situation with Cape Air adding back a second ATR to GUM-ROP-SPN, shaking off CNMI's governor/congressman's threat to bug the USDOT... Now this may become international "human rights" incidents with the FSM/RMI crying out for help! (UAL can subcontract out mail transport to Tan Holding's Asia Pacific Airlines if they don't have separate contract already, but humans are subject to the Hopper's reliability!)

Looks like you're right I see one did operate to TKK/PNI. Since a rescue flight Saturday was still undetermined, several bound for KWA stayed with the flight that eventually went MAJ-GUN nonstop Sat. afternoon.

One high ranking officer was on the cancelled UA154 Saturday. His delay into KWA meant that a large ship and crew was loaded up and sat for a day waiting for him. They paged and deplaned him first into KWA. Hopefully these issues have prompted some additional government attention to United.
