8/22 UA 896 HKG-ORD (N791UA) has had a rolling mechanical delay. Showing 1300 departure with 1459 arrival into ORD, 89 minutes late.

Cancelled due to "operational difficulties."

Talk about crap luck especially if you were rerouted via HKG due to the cancellation of UA 804 SIN-NRT and then your reroute goes mech.

Interesting to note that 8/22 UA 804 NRT-IAD is showing as cancelled too. I am guessing the 777 (N204UA) in NRT is still broken, because otherwise there shouldn't be a reason why they can't run UA 804 NRT-IAD today on 8/22.

Yes - I was supposed to be on the UA 804 sin-nrt leg but got upgraded to NH 802 today.

UA 989 IAD - FRA. 5 hr maintenance delay that resulted in a cancelled flight. Basically, I lost a day of vacation and spent five hours on a plane.

I was in J on an Award ticket (57k UA miles).

Filed a claim last night online after getting home. Got an e-mail this morning which doesn't reference my claim (looks like it was auto-generated for everyone on the flight) offering $350 vs. 17.5k UA miles.

I am UA Gold and was in business class.

From what I've read, $350 is low for a full day lost + 5 hour delay. Thoughts? I think there's a good chance that I'll hear from UA customer care in response to my complaint.

Alas, $350 is not low these days. I've seen $250 or even $200 for such situations during this Summer From Hell II. My advice, take the money, and move on.

Not sure where you are reading that. That actually sounds quite generous for a Gold. All my 4-7 hour delays this year have resulted in $200 or 10K miles. That's as a 1K on paid tickets.

It's working . . . I know the non-status pax are being offered $125 or 6250 miles and thus feel especially privileged

United doesn't care about "a full day lost" or "lost a day of vacation". Never has. The 5-hour delay or cancellation is what counts.

The one qualification I would make is that they will typically allow changes without a fee to the rest of your itinerary if you explain "I lost a day of vacation due to the cancel/delay."

So 896 finally cancelled? They had a "mechanical delay" for a while, but now it is "operational difficulties"?

I wonder if that makes a difference in compensation or rebooking requirements.

EDIT: I just noticed UA is ferrying an empty 777 to HKG from SFO (UA2194). I wonder if it's related...

UA 869 HKG-SFO delayed 30 minutes officially, sounds like more than that, unofficially, due to mechanical issue. The kicker is that this plane has apparently been sitting at SFO since arriving from LHR yesterday afternoon so this mechanical issue has been stewing. Hope I make it out in time as I have meetings Monday a.m. in HKG......

When planes sit on the ground for more than a couple of hours of rest the chance of something breaking goes up. Long layovers are not necessarily good for OT departures. Hope your plane gets fixed quickly!

Saw UA154/21AUG HNL-GUM Island Hopper cancelled out due to mechanical in MAJ on 22AUG.

Looks like the are running a special section today 23AUG HNL-GUM but only stopping in KWA and KSA. I don't what they do about the people going to PNI and TKK.

Do they send them onto GUM and make them go back?
