If the DidItClear website is going to be effective, it needs more members and trip upgrade data!

Please visit https://www.diditclear.com/ and include your trip experience with CPU's, RPU's, GPU's and any other means of upgrading available on United.

The better the data, the better the search results and experiential history.

To upgrade a long haul award ticket with a GPU, do the miles used to book the flight need to come from a GS account or can I book award tickets from my 1K account and then have a GS apply a GPU to upgrade?

My family will be accompanying me on a business trip and traveling on the same flights but on a separate PNR. I'll have a paid J seat and I was going to book economy tickets and apply GPUs for my wife, young daughter and lap infant. Unfortunately I waited on pulling the trigger and the flight went from R9 to R0 in the past few days on the outbound so now I'm stuck playing the upgrade lotto.

If I waitlist the GPUs would they clear one at a time if they released one R seat or would/could they be bypassed since I have 2 tickets waitlisted and one is for a 3 yr old and the other has a lap infant attached?

It is my understanding that I can use the Global Upgrades on United flights only, and not on Star Alliance carriers. My work travels are almost within Africa and there is no way I am flying United except for maybe one or two flights between Europe and Chicago this year.

This is the first time I have hit Premier 1K, so I have never been in a situation where I have upgrades that I may not use. I hate to let them go to waste. Is there any other way to use these upgrades? I realize you cannot really sell them, but can they be transferred to another passenger? Do people really sell these upgrades?

Any advice from you seasoned travelers is highly appreciated. Please and thank you!
you can use GPUs on LH, but you need to have them converted to paper and a recent change is that you have to have a specific LH flight booked (PNR in hand) to be able to do this.

mileage plus service center can help. there's a thread somewhere. search "using GPUs on Lufthansa" or check the master WIKI thread.

JFK/EWR - Same cities?

I just got off a phone call with 1K desk regarding the following:

JFK-LAX-NRT-HKG-NRT-SFO-JFK, and I was told it's a return itinerary, so I have to use two GPUs instead of one. Is that really the case? I thought that at least I could go all the way to JFK-LAX-NRT-HKG-NRT-SFO with one GPU and the final leg is RPU.

I am thinking about the next trip, JFK-SFO-HKG-SIN-NRT-SFO-EWR. Would that be considered as a return as well? I am hoping to just use one GPU in this itinerary.

GPU Upgrade Question

Taking the wife to SYD in April for 10th Anniversary.

(FSD-DEN-LAX-SYD and same back) booked H class (am 1k, she has no status) used 4 GPU's (2 for her 2 for me) and the domestic portions have cleared, just waiting on the LAX-SYD and the SYD-LAX portion.

Now the question if I clear and she does not can we swap seats mid flight to take turns sleeping? Will UA allow that?

Thanks for the help in advance.

Um - you're doing round trips. Fluky in the past perhaps (SFO-HNL-LAX on a single e500) but that's not going to work anymore. Be reasonable.

both trips are two GPU itins.
In the PMUA system, you could not transit an airport twice with the same upgrade instrument. Both of your itins (NRT in the first and SFO in the second) clearly violate that rule which i think is still active. (plus you have the 12 hour connection limit)

I think even replacing SFO with LAX in the second still wouldn't work. United has gotten better about closing this loophole.

RPU usage and FF#

I confirmed upgrades for my family and I using RPUs and had my MileagePlus number on the itinerary. I'd now like to credit my flight to my US Air account. Anyone know if I will lose my seat assignments if I do this? I talked to one agent who said no, but was wondering if anyone had experience with this. One of the upgraded segments is 11 hrs, so the seat matters!

agent is correct --once upgraded it will not be changed.

To be clear, it is the RPU that drives it. You could have "sponsored" yourself with your UA number, while using your US number. (I have done this many times.)

Had it been and UDU, I have heard of people being downgraded/seat switched when they change their UA number. (I cannot personally say this has happened to me, except being pushed out of E+.)

I want to book LHR-ORD-CVG / CVG-IAH / IAH-LHR and found flights with R availability on both TATL segments.

Do only the INTL segments need to be in "W" to use a GPU? Can I book the domestic segments in "T" or whatever the lowest available bucket is? Would the ORD-CVG segment still get upgraded the GPU if it were in a lower fare bucket since it is domestic?

GPU from Business to Global First

If I am booking a business class ticket on a 3-class plane, what fare class needs to be available for a GPU to process an upgrade to Global First?

Thanks in advance, and apologies if this has been answered elsewhere.
