Now the IAH-EWR outbound landed and hour late and missed our 1 hour connection to OSL. After a lot of arguing back and forth i decided to just cancel all the remaining legs and get a refund. It appears they immediately refunded the GPU for the return leg OSL-EWR but have not gotten the EWR-OSL leg. I "Should" get that gpu back correct? even though SEA-IAH-EWR all cleared the EWR-OSL misconnected and the rest of the reservation was cancelled.
Correct as the overwater leg wasn't used you get the GPU back.

Question GPU with a stopover on the domestic leg

goalie-sis will be flying DCA/IAD-SFO-SIN with a 4-5 day stopover at SFO and I'm wondering if applying a GPU to her flights is the same as if she was traveling all on the same day and if the same applies that if she clears the domestic portion but not the international portion, does the GPU get refunded on the stopover scenario as it would if all on same day travel?

I don't think you can apply one GPU to cover both legs; certainly I couldn't on my recent NRT-SFO-EWR with three days in SF. UA (online and by phone) wanted a separate instrument/miles to cover the SFO-EWR upgrade.

will require 1x GPU + 1x RPU to upgrade this itinerary.

Thank you both ^ (and would either of you like to tell goalie-sis [who happens to be a black belt] that I'm only gonna sponsor her on the int'l leg? )

Currently, Mr. and Mrs. GDaoV are #1 & #2 on the upgrade list for BF on a INTL flight. There are 4 seats in F. What is the likelihood that some paxs in BF will upgrade to F leaving 2 spots for me and the misses? First time using GPU's and it has been crap so far. There's still 1 BF seat left but they are still trying to sell it. For the first leg of the trip (domestic), I was upgraded (she'll sit up front) but she wasn't so I will assume that both GPU's will be redeposited if our INTL segment don't get upgraded.

You can see the GF upgrade waitlist on the website. If a name is listed on both the BF and GF list, it's a nonrev, and that won't help you, because he/she does not currently have a seat in BF.

UA will not upgrade pax from BF to GF to make space for Y-J upgrades.

Good luck. If you stay 1-2 on the waitlist, you have a chance until the door closes.

any answer would be a guess based on so little info.
However, what can be said is UA will not created space by oping-up a BF to GF

I saw R space open up and I was bumped to #2 so I called in and did the needful. I feel bad for #1 on the list but not as bad if Mrs. GDaoV had to sit in Y. I guess I need to keep another eye out so I don't end up in Y.

Can one apply a RPU after checking in?

I have never thought of this question before and can't say that I've seen it answered before:

I have a flight ORD-SFO coming up that I was not CPU'd for at T-96, but I think I have a reasonable chance of getting the CPU at the gate (it's a 757, so quite a few seats in first).

I'd prefer to save my RPUs of course if I can get the CPU.

What if I were to check in, view my spot on the waitlist around T-5, and apply the RPU then if I am not at #1/2? Obviously I'd have to call it in, but wouldn't it be possible to un-checkin myself, ask for the RPU to be applied, and then check back in?

Thanks,
Patrick

RPU's are useless once CPUs start to clear because there will be no seats available.

Not true. United doesn't clear all seats at once. RPUs also come from different inventory.

The one key is that RPUs cannot be waitlisted within 24 hours of a flight. There has to be open R inventory to apply an RPU.

hogwash.

CPU rarely fills the cabin, there are almost always 1-2 seats available and those seats are almost always put into the R bucket at T-24.

you can check in and view your position, but to properly apply the RPU you have to find someone capable of undoing your check in, applying the RPU, and then re-checking you in. (people say this is easy, but i've had a ton of trouble getting it done by agents, web support, or anyone else).

read my tale here:
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/unite...-sequence.html

if you apply the RPU without undoing the check in, you'll end up without a sequence number (or a sequence number that leaves you back in coach) and you'll run the risk of being downgraded at the gate.

IME it's best to decide if you want to burn the RPU when the R is open, and before checking in.

I tried to do this this week. It was R2 on IAD-SFO about 2 hours before flight.
I tried to apply the RPU before checking in, could not do it online.
Phone agent tried, but it would re-issue. She said, within 24 hours, it has to be done at the airport. UC agent said, oh we cant do anything about mileage plus...

Same story after checking in.
