Annoying fact for booking award travel: if your sign-in isn't very recent, you can still view your account details but won't see the elite award inventory buckets. Yeah, I'd normally use ExpertFlyer for this (bought a subscription due to all the integration issues), but I figured I'd check on an itin and thought, "Wow, no saver awards at all? They all vanished since this morning?"

I signed out, signed back in, and the saver inventory reappeared (guess the "ON/IN/XN" buckets are > 0 but "O/N/I" = 0).

Since the site obviously still knows who I am and my status--it shows my 1K status on the home page and also if I click to view my account details--you'd think it would automatically include the elite buckets without me having to force the issue. Even PMUA .bomb would prompt me to sign in to see the elite buckets if I'd timed out and then did an award search.

Thank you so much for posting this, since this is exactly what I was going to try on my next domestic trip. This just absolutely stinks! Well, the need for an agent card swipe explains why the kiosk was never able to read my passport. It's pretty stupid to have instructions on said kiosk welcome screen that tell you to scan your passport to begin, and then not actually be able to support that function.

Ditto. Happened to me on recent int itin.

Another downgrade of service. Take away check in agents and then make them stand beside the "self service" machines.

Ok, I've had good, corrected balances for about 7-10 days now (after all of the errors) and this exact issue just occurred. 5700 PQM negative balance that matches the exact PQM of the latest flight (part of a return where the outbound posted correctly). I'll wait 48 hours I guess.

My guess from observed behavior is that there are nightly batch processes that update various databases (I'm being generous here -- more likely flat files that started life on 9-track tape). Changes cascade from one database to another over two or three days. The negative opening balance we see is a number that's calculated on the fly, rather than being stored, and is therefore negative during the time between the individual PQM transactions posting and the YTD balance being updated a day or two later.

This is just conjecture, but what I see is consistent with similar errors from my old Cobol days. Of course, good systems managers would try to sequence all the jobs in the nightly batch so that everything was consistent again in the morning. :)

You need to call them pronto just in case. I had the same issue where it wouldn't, seemingly, let me select. Weirdly the seat I selected would disappear from being available but did not show me as being allocated to it - but I was when I got to the airport. Another one to add to the list.

Couldn't agree more. After following the instructions I tried turning my passport every which direction possible, with the same results every time. Thought it might be that particular kiosk, so went and tried one at the ticket counter. Same result. Sigh.

This is very curious as I walked up to a kiosk in Denver, placed my passport in face down and held firmly in place and the reader started blinking, then asked for the first three letters of my destination city and it worked perfectly. No card required by an agent.

Same experience here. Whether that is enough to register my passport in the system for my Int'l trip in 2 weeks is what I am curious about.

Interesting. Hope that's the case, and maybe it was just how they have it set up at SNA, or perhaps the agent at the UC was incorrect.

I'll try it next week when I leave SFO and see if it works. Bigger question remains if that counts as having your passport verified in the system. Which I sure hope it does.

Thanks for the updated data.

Just purchased a buy-up. Not only they haven't refunded the miles taken from initial mile upgrade request, the ticket is now endorsed with VALID CO/COEX.

so, I had something SIMILAR happen recently. Needed AWARD tickets from SFO to IAH to LIM. A couple weeks ago, we booked a couple, but needed two more. ALL the first cabin was open, but when I went to book last week there was NOTHING listed. Expertflyer showed ZERO, Economy STANDARD was available.

But when I CALLED IN (read, waiting 45 minutes on the Platinum line!!!!) of course there was PLENTLY of STANDARD award seats in First (books into business for some stupid reason) and the call center agent was able to book it no problem. They did charge me 25$ per reservation though which is bunk, since we took the mileage from my #1 1P 1MM GF account, so apparently that is why it cost 25$, but I tried to push back saying "but WHY doesn't this work online, why can't I book AWARD reservations ONLINE and if I CAN'T, they HOW can you charge me 25$ for luxury of waiting 45 minutes on hold, only to be told it now costs me 50$ to book"

Does this make ANY sense to anyone? Why wouldn't such award availability show up online? Is this just another way to drive passengers to the ridiculous call center and then PAY for bookings?

.bomb search engine (rev) not showing direct (*A partner) Air New Zealand flights on searches from HNL to AKL, or anywhere in OZ. Searches on ANZ site do show the flights.
