And sorry Continental! Whats with trying to make me fly via that dump LAX instead of SFO when I search for fares to JFK from MEL/SYD? No flights shown on the Continental website on any date via SFO, my fave USA airport!!! - UA.com always showed all options for flights, including via SFO? So you think because u show UPG availability on ur pages (which is usually 0 anyway) ur better than UA.com? Me thinks not!

I think it was about money. Specifically, I think it was about the fact that there were ongoing significant costs with Apollo that Shares didn't have, and that Shares offered a better (and less costly) platform moving forward.

Both systems suck.
They just suck differently.

And no, it was not an April Fool's joke.

Saving gobs of money and having more control over the software's evolution is huge in the long run even if it's painful in the short run.

IAD Checkin

Last night I flew IAD - FRA, whenI went to do online checkin, the system would not let me. I've done online checkin for numerous international flights. Then when I got to Dulles, the checkin did not have a reservation for me. Luckily I had a print out of my flight info and was able to be on the flight.

Wha is going on with this once proud airline. I could puke watching the CEO video intro before the safety video.

Can't answer the last part, but I think I may know what's going on in the first, as redwoman over on MP just found this gem:

https://hub.united.com/en-us/News/Mo...ort-kiosk.aspx

From united hub:
A note about passports: There are two changes to the check-in process that you should be aware of if youre used to traveling with United:

1. If youre a United customer and are booked on an international flight, you no longer need to enter your passport information manually when you check in. To store your passport information for later use during online check-in, you must first swipe your passport at an airport kiosk or hand it to an airport representative for validation. This means that customers that didnt have their passport stored in the Continental system will not receive their boarding pass right away until their passport has been swiped or verified by an agent.

2. You can store only one passport at a time in our system.

So here's my passport question then. If I check in at the Kiosk for an upcoming domestic trip using my passport for identification, will it store the information for a trip later this month to Asia so I can check in online for my Asia trip?

I've been wondering the same thing (and cursing the fact I used my FF # last week instead of my passport).

It should. I'm a legacy CO person and haven't had to swipe or have my passport manually checked in ages-- and I fly internationally every month.

International

Travel two trips a month internationally, where are our (what used to be called) System Wide Upgrades.. Haven't received them for my new GS qualification and/nor my accumulated mileage... Also last night, I used the online system to upgrade to First on a scheduled trip ORD to DME, and it charged me $61... That is a first time occurance...

Huh? You got them (6) when you crossed 100K EQM last year and 2 more if you crossed 150K or a higher 50K multiple. They haven't come with a kit since they were paper years ago. Just a guess but the $61 is probably a premium cabin tax levied by one of the airports - that is getting more common these days although places like LHR have done it for years. If so - nothing to do with UA - they just have to collect it if you are in the designated cabin.

The difference being that PMUA either had a a way to avoid it or just ate the tax themselves. I've never been charged this in the past for an upgrade on UA, but perhaps this is another "enhancement" coming over from PMCO.

Actually I had been hit with such a tax on PMUA. And on AA. I have no complaints with the airline passing these through - there isn't any reason that they should have to pay to give me an upgrade. I think at times in the past some of the airports didn't correctly pick up on upgrades and so everything slid by. I do find the idea of such extra premium cabin taxes annoying though - the airport isn't doing any more work depending on the cabin I am sitting in on a plane.

I was charged this tax by PMUA at CDG multiple times.
