Wondering if someone could help me with a quick question. I have Global Entry and my sister has a NEXUS card. We are traveling by car from Canada into the US. Can we use the NEXUS car lane? Her car is registered with NEXUS. I'm just wondering if Global Entry users can go through the NEXUS car lane.

My wife and I applied for Nexus in mid October and just received our conditional approvals. We scheduled the interview in Detroit. Great about Detroit is that we got our interviews for just a little over a week out.
Has anyone else interviewed in Detroit. We were hooping that the enrollment center was at the tunnel, but found out it is at the Ambassador Bridge. Not a big issue, but we live three and a half hours away and will actually be arriving the day before and staying at the Marriott Renaissance Center downtown the night before. I Google Mapped the drive, and it takes us through Canada. We don't really want to deal with boarder crossings and run the risk of being late. All the USA based alternatives still have one going over the bridge to Canada and back. It seems the maps think you can only get to this place on the way from Canada. There are no routes on lesser surface streets. All seem to take one way out of the way since they all get on a major highway. The directions on the interview paperwork are either from Canada or from USA off of 75 or 96. It looks to be about a 27 minute drive. Looking at surface streets, I think it they would take a lot less time. While the address is W Fort Street and almost a straight shot from downtown, it doesn't look like there are any entrances to the compound from these surface roads. The interview paperwork says there is no pedestrian entrances. Is there an entrance to the Enrollment Center from any of the surface streets? Is there perhaps an entrance to the Ambassador Bridge crossing from the surface streets vs 75? If all else fails, we will just get our way back to the highway. Also, it doesn't look like the Detroit Enrollment Center has an iris scan camera. Though something I read on the Canadian site is that one can get their iris scan at the Windsor Airport. We can definitely do that, but is it even necessary? We likely won't be using NEXUS for air travel in and out of Canada and I think the iris scan is only required for that. So should we forego that or get it anyway since we are not that far away anyway? It will also give us the opportunity to grab some poutine for lunch before driving back home. There should be directions on GOES when you scheduled the interview. It states not to use a GPS as you will get lost. Instead, enter the Ambassador Bridge from I-75/96, but, before going through the toll booths, there will be a sign directing you under the bridge to the left for the NEXUS office. A gate will open and you will park by the cargo processing facility, which is where the interview will take place. The CBP officer will give you a slip of paper and you will drive out of the complex through the truck inspection lane. Hand the slip of paper to the CBP officer and they will immediately let you out. No ID check and no additional questions. With the iris scan, I never got mine. I went a few months back to get one at the airport, which is about a 20 minute drive into Ontario. However, they were closed despite the website stating they were open as well as their automated telephone number. So, the CBSA officer recommends calling the number given in the recording, which is a CBSA officer's cell phone, and scheduling an appointment. There may be officers present at the airport, but many of them are not trained on how to take an iris scan. Also, note there is a $3CAD/hr parking fee for the short-term airport parking. You only need an iris scan to enter Canada at an airport. I have had NEXUS for over 3 years and never needed it as I only enter the US by air and cross the US/Canada only by car. |

Not sure if we will bother with the iris scan. Though I want to go over in to Canada anyway to get Canadian passport photos taken as it is up for renewal and finding a reliable place in the USA is not easy. I have had passport photos that were taken in the USA rejected by Passport Canada several times. The only place that got it right was Sears and they don't have a portrait studio near us any more and are not likely to have a store near us if they keep up their current trend. It may be worth just going to the airport to see if getting the scan is possible. I suspect this is only needed once, even if you renew? I am sure I will fly in to a Canadian airport again some day. |
Based on post #10150, it doesn't look like I need to bother with the iris scan as we won't have physical cards yet on the day of the interview.

NEXUS is much more worthwhile in bypassing the security lines when checking in, and NEXUS really shines when using it at land crossings. Neither of these situations require an iris scan. |

I have seen several references to this here and also through Internet searches. All of the links I have found get a 404 error on the Canadian Govt website. Is this something I should review before the interview? Want to be prepared and know and understand the rules when they ask if I know and understand the rules. But I can't find this thing for the life of me.

Did the interview in Detroit. Took 5min. Couldn't do the Iris scan until I got the card (which I got about a week after the interview)

My nexus card expires on Oct 2017. When is the best time to apply for renewal?

I received mine then but did not apply for the renewal until yesterday, a little more than three months from expiry. Six months out seemed a bit long. When I selected "Renew Membership" on my GOES login, it offered three programs: NEXUS, Global Entry and SENTRI. I am not enrolled in SENTRi so don't know why that was an option. I selected NEXUS as I have read on this thread about problem if you select to submit a GE renewal application and then once GE renewal application is completed, unable to renew NEXUS until after the card expires. Once I updated the information in my application, paid the $50 and submitted my renewal application, I went back to my login to see about GE renewal but the renewal options were no longer offered. I am waiting to see how/if my GE will also be renewed. I recall on my initial application procedure that I was automatically enrolled in GE for the $50 NEXUS application and fee. I am curious- will I automatically receive a GE renewal for this NEXUS renewal or do I need to also submit a $100 somehow to continue in the GE program? I have enjoyed nearly six years of validity on my current NEXUS card because my first interview and approval came a few days after my birthday (cards expire five years plus the next birthday). I am planning on scheduling my interview the day after my birthday, hoping that I can enjoy the same extended validity on my new card. |

DON'T try to enroll in Global Entry separately if you are already enrolled in NEXUS. See the Wiki at the top of every page of this thread on what happened to someone who did that. His NEXUS membership was cancelled and he became ineligible to re-enroll in NEXUS until after the expiry date shown on his now-invalid NEXUS card. |

Take a look at the DHS Trusted Traveler Programs Comparison Chart: NEXUS
