I believe they're talking about the "regular" lanes, but that are used for ReadyLane, where everyone needs to have a RFID type card (NEXUS, enhanced license, US passport card, etc).

So I've been trying to get a definitive answer…there's lots of confusion on this thread.
Is it required to have a passport with you for air travel between the US and Canada with the Nexus card. From what I can tell, for entering the US as a US citizen it's enough. For entering Canada as a US citizen, it may not be enough?

I need to get an Indian visa in Toronto and their processing times seem to be absolutely horrific, so I would love to make one US trip with just my passport.

Anyway to get a definitive answer?

The definitive answer is that there is no definitive answer.

Current published information from both Canadian and US authorities says that a NEXUS card is a suitable alternative to a passport for traveling between the two countries by land, sea, and - yes - air. Air travel was a recent addition.

Reports of CBSA and CBP agents at the airport, on the other hand, are quite different. Maybe both of CBSA and CBP's websites are wrong and the agents are right. Maybe the websites are right and the agents just haven't been retrained yet.

The bottom line is: Hope for the best, plan for the worst. That is as definitive as it gets.

As for your specific issue - having to travel by air with just your NEXUS card because you left you passport at the Indian consulate for visa processing. I'd recommend explaining that to the CBSA/CBP agents should they ask you about your passport, and show them the print-outs of the CBSA and CBP websites (which you brought with you) that both say that a NEXUS card is acceptable in lieu of a passport for air travel.

Can NEXUS cards be used as proof of identification and to denote citizenship in non-NEXUS lanes when entering Canada?

Yes. NEXUS cards are now accepted as proof of identification and to denote citizenship when entering Canada by land, air (when entering Canada from the U.S.), or marine ports of entry. This means that Canadian or U.S. citizens who are NEXUS members may use their membership card when entering Canada by land, air or boat when using non-NEXUS lanes.

NEXUS members who are permanent residents of Canada or the U.S. are still required to travel with a passport and proof of permanent residence, and may be requested to present these documents to the officer upon arrival at the border.

NEXUS members who choose to use their NEXUS card in a non-NEXUS lane will be processed as a regular traveller and will not receive the benefit of expedited entry.

Is there any way to interview in the US at a non-designated site? I don't plan on making any trips to the boarder or the listed airports anytime soon...

Nope.

NEXUS is designed for people who actually do travel to/from Canada. It's nice that it's cheaper than Global Entry while still giving you Global Entry benefits, but in exchange for that lower price, you have to deal with our northern neighbor.

Since you need to interview with both a U.S. and a Canadian border official, it makes sense that all of the stations are along the border. The station furthest away from the Canadian border that does NEXUS interviews is in Seattle. All the rest are along the border or inside Canada.

Has anyone gotten their conditional approval in the past month? Just wondering what the current timeline is, my wife and I are just at 4 weeks pending review today.

Timeline to conditional approval has been pretty consistent at ~8 weeks for the past few months. Check out the Nexus application processing time thread.

Still hoping someone knows the answer to this:

Can you give up Nexus and still be enrolled in GE ?????

For that matter, can you even somehow 'exit' Nexus, if you are ineligible? I moved out of the US (though have a "permanent" address there as am still a citizen). I think that makes me ineligible. And in any case I cannot update any documents in person as I cannot visit any of the Nexus offices (unless I learn to walk or drive across an ocean!).

Help, anyone??

Convinced that someone knows the answer, and never having had a question here in this helpful forum thread go unanswered... bumping this.

Can you give up Nexus and still be enrolled in GE ?????

[Not sure how one could really "resign" from Nexus, other than letting it expire/lapse, anyway.]

Why not? You obviously have to be separately enrolled in each. If your Nexus membership expires before your GE membership, then you just let the Nexus expire and subsequently renew GE.

I'm sure you could also ask to be removed from Nexus, and they would happily comply.

Is there any particular reason you have to end Nexus before it expires?

If you have GE through NEXUS, then no, I don't think so. If you cancel your NEXUS membership, I'm sure GE disappears along with it.

If you have GE separately (i.e. you've paid the $50 NEXUS enrollment fee and the $100 GE enrollment fee), then sure, why not?

Passport Renewal + Issuing Authority Question

Hi Folks,

So I've got my new 10-year Passport (looks really cool, btw), and went to update my NEXUS and GE information on GOES.

Everything up to the "ISSUING AUTHORITY" can be updated.

My old Passport was issued by the Brampton office. The new one from Mississauga.

Should I take any further action such as visiting the NEXUS office at YYZ airport or one of the Niagara Falls border locations?

I don't have any trips until January when I fly AC from YYZ-PVG, but want to make sure my NEXUS is valid in order to ensure use of those security lanes.

Thanks!

Sean Peever Nov 6, 2014 3:15 pm

I would visit and get it updated, at least in YVR they really don't hesitate to pull the nexus card for any discrepancy.

ffsim Nov 6, 2014 3:24 pm

Definitely visit the office... its necessity is an ongoing debate in the massive Nexus thread, but IME the only way to ensure your docs are up to date is to physically hand them over to the folks in the Nexus office.

As this is a Nexus question and not an Air Canada not Aeroplan topic it's been relocated to the Trusted Traveller forum for further input.
