Was waiting to the new year to try once again, but now with the automated US customs system in YUL, the wait is way down, so denial isn't the cruel torture it was last time.
Anyone with tips for getting NEXUS approval, please share! My violation was pretty big, and the $4000 penalty seems to have stunned the interviewers both times...

$4000 in penalties? ouch! I had a customs violations several years ago, and I still got my Nexus, so I'm assuming it depends on what was seized at the time if you're being denied a card, or still on file, mine was a set of used wheels, I undervalued them...was it with Canada? or the US? was it restricted or prohibited items?

Change of status - PR to Citizen

I've had my Nexus card for a few years. I have a U.S. green card (permanent resident) and am Canadian. My Nexus card lists me as Canadian and was issued by the U.S.

I'm likely applying for U.S. Citizenship soon. Since the Nexus card is tied to my green card, how will getting a U.S. passport affect the card? How do I transition if I have to?

Also, should I wait for my wife and kids to apply until they all have both of their passports? (i.e., currently, my kids all have U.S. passports and will be getting Canadian ones and my wife has a Canadian passport and upon getting U.S. citizenship will get a U.S. passport).

So, for those interested, here is my final timeline:
- Application submitted on GOES on July 10th.
- "Conditional Approval Notification" on September 20th.
- Interview at YUL on October 1st.
- "Approval Notification" on October 1st.
- Card received on October 7th.

I was in the same situation a few years ago (Canadian, US green card, and a nexus card). Applying for US citizenship was not a problem. Once you get your US citizenship, call up the nexus people and tell them. I can't remember if they took my info over the phone or told me to just update my profile on GOES, but in any case it was simple. When I renewed my Nexus later, I think the US guys asked me which citizenship was my "primary" one. The only effect of choosing a primary one is that that citizenship gets printed on your nexus card. In no way would your rights or privileges be diminished wrt to the "non-primary" citizenship.

I don't think there is any disadvantage to applying now for your wife and kids. They will get their nexus cards sooner. Once they get their other citizenship, it's easy to update the info (as I noted above).

Not sure how soon you plan on using GE, but if your interview is tomorrow at the very least you should be able to use GE tomorrow after you interview. When I applied originally, I was told I could use GE right away (obviously not needing the card)

I used the online form to declare my card Lost/Stolen and obviously did not have my physical card. Since I don't have the card I can't use the Nexus kiosks (though I think I used them once before I knew it was lost.)

The CBP agent at Fort Eerie said that as soon as I reported the Lost/Stolen card, GE was no longer allowed either.

He also stated that even though my card was approved/everything, I could not use Nexus *or* GE until I received the new card and activated it online.

He didn't sound particularly confident in his answers, but I'll take his word!

I had my interview on Thursday Oct 3rd, and had to travel this past Monday Oct 7th. So I had to sweat it out with the unwashed in the CPB queue at YYZ/T3. Actually it was only about a 5 minute wait, so not bad, and it was a very cheerful agent.

Coming back (same day trip) I used the new passport/form scanning machines in the Canadian customs call and that was just as quick as Nexus.

And, Murphy's law holds out as usually.. On the return trip on Monday, I found my "lost" card in a deep recess of my work bag while looking for that rarely used pencil so I could do a crossword-...

Today (October 7th) I received the new card, mere hours after I found my lost card. *shakes head*. Oh well, $25 card fee and a 4 hour round trip to Fort Erie is all it cost me.

Card Received: Oct 7th

Just FYI for anyone at YYZ transiting from Int'l arrival to US connection, you'll need to wait in line to show your GE receipt to the US CBP to get your BP stamped before proceeding to dropping your form off and to security line. So there'll be a delay if the "Crew" line is long. Prior to that you can just print the receipt and drop it off at the US CBP collective checkpoint where they stamp your BP.

A bit of a pain now.

Isn't it like this for direct flights from YYZ to the US too? I don't even recall a special GE line at the exit. Last time I was there, it was just everyone gaggled together. Luckily, the throughput of the desk agents isn't high enough that this gaggle was very large.

I have Nexus.

US citizen flying into Toronto Airport from Tokyo, can I use the Nexus lane?
Am bringing my pet with me, though the pet is flying cargo, can I still use the Nexus lane? (I have a Canadian work permit.)

Spoke to Nexus officials who gave me the following answers:

1. Yes
2. Yes, I have to check on the screen that I am bringing a live animal

Hey YYZers, how long has it been that NEXUS security is lumped with priority security line at YYZ transborder? Was transiting at YYZ last week and they were lumped together (i.e. NEXUS with J class/E/SE line)? Can slow down transit quite a bit!

Transit you are lumped together. Originating in YYZ, you have your own dedicated lane. However on some days off peak, the Nexus lane can be as long or longer than the Priority lane. I wish they would add more screening lanes for Nexus at YYZ transborder.

Anyone know if the renewal and application process is suspended during the furlough?

One of these days I'll try the Altitude line. Maybe today, depending on what the NEXUS line looks like.
