I had a funny (funny-weird, not funny-haha) experience trying to OLCI for UA out of ABQ, and it asked if I was using passport or "other travel document" and since the latter had no pulldown menu, I selected that to see if NEXUS was on the next screen. After asking me a few more questions, but no questions related to identifying said "other" travel document, it said I am not eligible to OLCI. So I went back to the beginning and OLCI with my passport. Even then, although it assigned me a seat, it refused to give me a boarding pass. I can only assume it just needed to see the actual passport, because I had used NEXUS on the southbound and it did not have my passport number in the system. I was at the airport in plenty of time, so got a confirmed seat on the oversold segment, but because I had no opportunity to use NEXUS, I could not use the PreCheck program. Anyone who has flown UA able to explain for future reference how I could provide my NEXUS info to UA?

Went to Toronto Pearson today and had the Iris Scan as well as Passport update done. No problem at all and parking at Terminal 1 for an hour cost us 10 Bucks. I asked about the granola Bars and they said yes..indicate as food and go to Secondary and it will only be 5 minutes before they allow us through..Very helpful.Kind and pleasant agents in Toronto, both Canadian and US Agents there.. We were pleased. They even had a test machine there to practice on..One agent suggested when travelling in Canada use Nexus and when going to the States use the other device that wants your passport Bar code and fingerprints..Not sure why she would indicate that. Great experience in any event.

Hawggy, the other machine, the "GE" or Global Entry machine is faster than doing the hokey pokey trying to get the NEXUS machine to read your eyes. The fingerprint scanner can read your fingers in multiple places on the glass plate, but your eyes have to be in precisely the right place. I am getting better every time with it, but I would pick the GE machine over NEXUS machine any day given the choice.
vernonc, Interesting -- My UA boarding pass said "Star Alliance Gold" (spelled out) but yet no Precheck. I thought Precheck had been rolled out to the US domestic segments of itineraries that cross the border. I know those were not included initially, but I thought I read it had been expanded. If it hasn't, that accounts completely for my experience. |

If you have status (*S or *G) you will get TSA precheck printed on your boarding pass. I did not provide UA with my Nexus/GE info and still get TSA precheck every time.

If everyone with status had Precheck, there wouldn't be long Premier Access lines and short Precheck lines. |

Don't know about the others, but UA also has a checkbox for all MP members in their online profiles, and its been there since the program launch, whereby the traveler gives permission for UA to send their data to TSA to try and get precheck. My wife, a UA silver at the time, used that box to get precheck before Canadians with Nexus could get precheck on their own. She got it most of the time, but I imagine a non-elite wouldn't have success.

TSA does not currently "sell" access to precheck. They have announced plans for non frequent flyers to be able to pay a fee to apply for the program to be eligible, but that doesn't mean they will pass the check, or get it everytime. Believe it is later this year, but the application isn't even available yet. I agree, Canada needs to implement some kind of similar screening program. At least for the Nexus priority lines, which doesn't really change the screening process at all. |

I have only used the Nexus machine for practice so am total ignorant about the workings of GE. I think what the Canada Border agent mean't maybe was..Use GE going into the USA then on return to Canada use the Nexus machine..Not too sure. You might know more about this? |

To use the GE machine, you don't do an iris scan, you'll need to insert your passport, and scan your fingerprints, and it will take your picture. It will then ask you to confirm your flight information (or occasionally, you might have to enter it manually) then ask you similar questions to those on the US customs form. Once you answer everything, it will print out a receipt and hand it into the card collector. An X on the receipt (if you answer yes to anything or get randomly selected) means you go to secondary, otherwise, you should be waived through. Note - when using GE, you do not need to fill out a paper customs form - you answer the questions on screen instead. Addition to note: have a blank paper customs card with you - on the odd occasion where the machines aren't working, you'll need it to get through. Also note the questions on screen are slightly different than the ones on the form. The most notable is regarding food which is discussed above - using the US paper customs form, any and all "food" needs to be declared. Using the GE machine - it asks about specific kinds of foods like fruits, meat, seeds, etc - much similar to how the Canadian customs card asks about it. One other thing I notice - when using the GE machine and connecting in the US, when confirming the flight information, it always gives me the first flight number, but lists my final destination (I.e. - if going YYZ-ORD-DAY, it will list the flight number departing YYZ and the destination of that flight as DAY, even though it's not really). I've always just confirmed that as correct - asked about this once and they said it was fine. |
