This is the policy with US Customs officers at YUL. You MUST SHOW your Nexus card. I've never travelled into YUL with Nexus, so not sure if it's the same policy with Cdn Customs officers.
Arriving at YUL last Tuesday, I didn't talk to anyone... simply walked directly to the form collector at the exit, and out. |
As I understand it a Canadian entering the US with Nexus can spend up to six months in the country. Does anyone know if one was in the country for 5 months at the beginning of the year (Jan-May) then another two at the end (Nov-Dec) if this would be illegal according to US immigration law?

For immigration purposes, you're fine.
However, from a taxation point of view, if you're in the US for 183 days per year (or more), you're subject to tax laws: from: http://www.centa.com

So, if you arrive in Hawaii at 10:50 PM, that is a day, and if you leave at 1:00 AM, that is a day.
In addition, to arrive at the 183 days, the U.S. looks at the two preceding years. You have to take 1/3 of the days you were present in the U.S. in the preceding year and add it to this year's days and then you have to take 1/6 of the days in the year preceding that and add it to this year's days. Soooooooo! if you were in the States for six months in 1998, that counts as 1 month, or 30 days for 2000. If you were in the States for three months in 1999, that counts as 1 month or 30 days for 2000. You are now limited to stay in the States for 120 (maybe 122) days in 2000, after which you become taxable on your world income unless you can show a tax home in another country (as in the treaty provisions above). There is a form called an 8840 that you may file to claim exemption from this if you can show that your closer connection is to Canada. This is tough to do however. As I was writing this little part on Sept 29, 95, I received a call from a 55 year old man in Alberta. He has a home in Canada, is retired already and spends the winters golfing at his golf course condominium in Arizona. In Arizona, he golfs, plays cards, goes to church and visits with friends in the same golf course country club estate. In Canada, he visits his kids in B.C. and travels in his motorhome. He can't wait to get back down south where he now lives in his mind and which is fast becoming his centre of vital interest and "closer connection." His Canadian friends have died, divorced, moved away, are still working or go south to different places to spend their winters. His closer connection, "his home" without much doubt, is now in the U.S. |
Need an appointment to update passport info for nexus?
Hello
My passport has been renewed since I received my nexus card. Can I walk into a nexus office in YYZ and have my profile updated or do I need to make an appointment? Thanks |
I'm trying to recall, but I think you can walk in. I tried to do it over the phone which they wouldn't accept. I'm pretty sure I just stopped at the office at YYZ. As a matter of fact, I'm positive I didn't have an appointment now that I think of it.

New Nexus Cards - Delayed Again!
Was in the YYZ office to update some info. on Thursday, and so asked about the status of the new, security-enhanced Nexus cards that were supposed to be sent in mid-December. I got told by the agent (on the Canadian side) they had not been sent yet, and they were now expected to be sent out in Q1 of '09. Said they are only giving estimates within a quarter now, so that they were less likely to miss another deadline.
Anyone think they will get sent out by the end of Q1? Originally, I believe they were supposed to be sent in Feb. '08, and have been delayed several times. |
GOES down?
I've been trying to access GOES for a few weeks now since I want to get NEXUS for my newborn. I can't seem to access GOES and can't find anything that says they are down. Anyone know what's up?

I accessed GOES just now, as well as last week, and it worked normally for me.

If you update your passport don't you need to drop into the US side to have them update as well? The CBP agents who did my Nexus registration at YVR stated update Canada first then come into the US office to ensure their record is updated. Anyone have any different instructions on this?

Sometime it's a very odd program and everyone handles it differently.. |
Passports have to be done in person, as they need photocopies. If oyu have a passport that is expired, and haven't reported to the Nexus office with the new one - you will get sent to secondary. They do keep track of this. Not sure if this is true for DL. In fact, you are supposed to update them of everything - new addresses, new passports, new DL's. You are even supposed to inform them about changes in employment.
I've given drivers license updates (three times actually since enrollment in the program, as I've moved from Ontario to Illinois, then to New Jersey, and finally, to Ohio last month). Just did my last DL update in YYZ last week. Have heard rumours that you don't need to update your DL anymore, but they have always changed the info. in the system for me, and taken copies. Due to the confusion from the last time i did this, after the Canadian agent took the copy, I asked if I needed to provide this to the US side in the office. She said no, she would make sure they got the information. They did, because GOES was updated with the my new information that afternoon. I'm wondering if some of the agents are confused, as for land crossings, you used to have to tie your Nexus to a vehicle by license plate number, but no longer have to. I believe the Nexus guide still says that you have to update Nexus with all ID changes. |

Mine came today. Registered mail, with a sleeve to prevent baddies from reading my RFID in the airport.
