Tomorrow he has a solo trip to meet me in the US (golf trip) .... and will be navigating Pearson T1 Nexus first time. I've explained the process to him ad-naseum, and as you know, a 17 year old automatically already knows this stuff.....

It should be interesting!

Well?

Well I finally got to use TSA Pre✓.

Doing a MR today out of SFO on UA. My experience:
I walked into the terminal, and asked a TSA employee where the Pre✓ line was. He directed me to it (a bit of a walk). It was right beside the priority checkin lines, and had a bunch of signage for First Class and Global Services and all that, but finally I saw a Pre✓ sign. There was no one in line, but three TSA employees standing out in front, one at the boarding pass scanner, one behind the xray machine, and one in front of it.

I walked up, they looked at my boarding pass (which I printed before a gate had been assigned), and they asked me what gate I was going to. I told them 81. They said I had to go back where I came from, as this was for United premier members. I said I had Pre✓. She didn't really believe me, and asked another guy. He wasn't sure, so he gave my boarding pass to the guy at the scanner. He scanned it. Three beeps.

From there, it went smoothly. They asked me if I had used Pre✓ before (I had not), and explained the process. Take out cell phone, wallet, keys, coins. Leave on jacket, shoes, belt. Walk through metal detector. Done.

Best airport security experience I can remember.

Now, to get this to work for me, I had to sign up for a United MP account, and link all my UA itineraries to it. It didn't seem to let me enter my Pass ID from my NEXUS card with just the booking reference - I had to do it from an actual MP account. I also had to explicitly opt in for Pre✓. But from there, it went well.

You can even check if you're eligible for TSA Pre✓ before you get to the airport by uploading your PDF boarding pass at http://online-barcode-reader.inliteresearch.com/ (select PDF417). In the output, there's a section like "YYYYYYYYYYYYYYY3 UA AC ZZZZZZZZZ" where ZZZZZZZZZ is my AP number, and I don't remember what the YYYYYYYYYYYYYYY is, but if it has the 3 on the end, you get Pre✓.

Definitely worth it for any NEXUS member travelling on a domestic US itinerary to do whatever is necessary on the airline (not sure if everything works the same as UA) to get Pre✓ enabled. It's definitely a nice change to be able to avoid both the nude scanner and the groping :)

Now I'm just hoping they open this up to US->Canada flights. That would be awesome.

On Wednesday I was traveling YVR-LAX and I was SSSS, so when I entered the NEXUS line no issues until I get to the one CATSA person who scans your boarding pass, just as you place your stuff through the x-ray. She said passport and I said I am using Nexus, she said passport, it appeared as this was the only English she knew or at least the only word in her vocabulary! I used my Nexus card with AC and CATSA wants passport. There were a lot of people behind me, so I did not stand my ground, I folded like a cheap deck of cards, gave in pulled out my passport and went through to the next stage of the process.

I made several comments to the woman about training, she said she was trained, I said perhaps when at 7-11 but not for this. None the less I complained to a supervisor about the lack of knowledge as the passport is not the only piece of ID required, she did not care so I explained to her this is why we make fun of them and they have such a bad reputation because of the poor attitude and lack of sufficient training. She did not appear to look pleased, I said it’s too bad how they can so easily fix the issues with better attitude and yet continue to fail! Ya I was annoyed!

I have two more YVR to US flights this month and I will be primed for a show down!

Probably this going to be in the pipe line soon.

Does this mean you'll have to credit your mileage to United not AC?

I'm able to enter my NEXUS number into my itinerary. I believe you put it in the "known traveller number" box.

Had an appointment for a family member at the Vancouver Urban Enrollment Center yesterday but we couldn't make it due to illness. We called within 24h and eventually spoke to someone at the office who said they would remove us from the roster, but was unable to do any rescheduling and we had to do that on the GOES website.

Problem is the original appointment keeps showing up under the account with the original date/location and the button option to change the appointment disappears within 24 hrs - so now we're stuck and can't reschedule.

Is there a customer service number we can call to reset the appointment on the GOES account so we can start over?

It would also be great if CATSA developed a parallel scheme, at least for domestic and transborder flights. Is anyone aware of any such plans?

There was some explicit opt-in aside from just entering the number (although mine never stuck there when I saved before creating a MP account) where you had to say "I want to opt in to Pre✓ blah blah blah", that I only saw once having an account.

I can still credit everything to AC, as it lets you enter any number for each reservation.

The other big benefit is that I can keep track of all my United itineraries in one place, rather than having to keep typing in the confirmation number.

And this flight made me cross 25k :). I just wish I could move up from boarding group 7 for the next three flights :(

canadiancow Dec 8, 2012 5:12 pm

One thing I forgot to add: I gave the guy my Canadian passport. He asked if I had any American identification. I did not. Someone beside him said "it's okay for Canadians too!"

So for a non-status Canadian, it might be a little slower than normal. In the future, I'll probably just emphasize that I have Pre✓ and they should just scan my boarding pass.

Yes, similar rules will eventually roll out in the Nexus lanes, but CATSA are taking their sweet time about it. For instance, the Nexus line at YYC Domestic A is trialing leaving your laptop in.

The biggest issue at present is that such procedures would require the line to be locked down (no non-Nexus pax ever), which CATSA is loathe to do.

I definitely would like to see it happen, but having seen how empty Pre✓ is, it sounds like it's a waste of money until you have a lot of people using it. So then you'd lose the benefit of having an empty line, but you'd still have a better experience by leaving your clothes on.

I thought someone would have answered this... I can't but there is a help line listed at the bottom here:
https://goes-app.cbp.dhs.gov/common/goes_support.html

Spoke to them...there is nothing GOES support can do. We need to rebook with the enrollment center or find a cancelation slot with another center.
