Just so you know US preclearance at YYZ wants the blue form anyway and most of the time CBSA wants one on exiting T3 as well. After the TDC has been put in the mailbox.

I attribute this to lack of knowledge across the board.

I was thinking of/referring to arriving in the US from an international destination (i.e. MUC-SFO.)

I didn't think when I applied first few days of Sept. it would take 4+ months to complete the entire process and didn't think I'd be travelling to TPA without the card.

tcook - when did you apply?
I applied on Sept 10, and it is still pending.

Sept. 6 I applied and only received my conditional approval last night.

In that vein, when using Nexus at YUL, you still have to talk to an agent right after using the kiosk and they seem to ask all the questions Nexus was supposed to avoid.

Saw this in YVR preclearance a couple of months ago right after they opened a new wicket. The supervisor noticed and told him that these people are Nexus and that you don't really need to ask them anything or check their passports.

New best thing about Nexus/Global Entry is saying no thanks to the flight attendant when they hand out the blue customs declaration forms.

At LAX today I had a really cool CBP officer at the customs exit who told me "You don't need this man, I'll throw it out for you. Have a good day." Very impressive, and very convenient I didn't need the form!

Had the same experience in EWR which was nice for a change...the CBP officer was telling someone else about 5 people ahead of us in the queue and when we got to him he said, "i guess you heard me tell the other person you dont need the (blue) form" followed by a smile. He then asked how we liked the system and was quite cheery...pleasantly strange for CBP but a welcome change from the usual grunt ^

Bit of a noob question. I've used NEXUS for flights and know the procedures well. However, whenever I use the land border, I always use NEXUS going into the US but use the normal Customs lanes when I return as I'm always above my exemption limits.

So, I've never used NEXUS coming back into Canada through a land border. I'm wondering if I'm under my exemption and use the NEXUS lanes coming back in, do I still need to fill out those NEXUS declaration forms when I'm under? I thought you had to fill out those forms regardless but, from watching cars in the NEXUS lane, it seems almost nobody hands in those forms?

You still have to fill out the TDC form even if you are under the exemption... If you didn't buy anything, then no form necessary.

You can make verbal declarations now in NEXUS lanes, at least at the Point Roberts / Boundary Bay crossing. They don't have the TDC deposit boxes anymore. You can either hand the agent a TDC, or you can make a verbal declaration.

Got busted without Nexus card

I got busted using Nexus at YYZ without my Nexus card. Had the visit to the side room for my lecture where my passport and other info was copied. I was told this would be sent across for processing. I know the rules indicate I could lose my card for this but is this the likely outcome or is there a chance I will be shown some mercy?

MR_MAMA Oct 20, 2011 9:10 am

I heard they are pretty strict about this. Why would you risk that?

rotmanmba Oct 20, 2011 9:12 am

forgot my wallet...

MR_MAMA Oct 20, 2011 9:14 am

Right but then you knew you should not go through the Nexus line, you put your clearance at risk. Somethng I would never risk personally! I would have waited in the general line. Even if they don't pull your card, you probably will be flagged in the system when you go through next time make sure you have the card with you at all times.

rotmanmba Oct 20, 2011 9:18 am

found out I forgot my wallet when I went to search for my card when asked for it. No need to share what I should have done. Was given as much guilt as I will ever need by the friendly agents yesterday

Santander Oct 20, 2011 2:27 pm

I've heard of this happening to people and they usually didn't lose their card on the first try. But yes, you will be flagged and if you break the rules again don't expect any leniency at all. It's shocking how many Nexus cardholders forget their cards but use the Nexus lane anyways or even not bother to bring their card at all. What don't they get about zero tolerance? I even threw out 3 cigarettes in the washroom at YVR the other day to use the Nexus line because I was carrying 203 cigarettes. I'm not lecturing rotmanmba, but in general people need to remember that this is a program based on trust. Members need to conduct themselves in a trustworthy and honourable manner, otherwise the Nexus programme may need to be reviewed. (and we don't want that!)
