I'm not sure citizenship or residency really matters in regards to who interviews you. I got processed at the exact same place you did, and had pretty much the same experience as you did, and I'm a US Citizen.
The only thing out of line was the behavior of one of the Canadian CBPers. Terse, rude and unpleasant to be around. Will never forget her face, and I remembered her badge number to stay away from for future information. |
YVR Office - Interview Tips/Suggestions?
Hello,
I have my appointment with the NEXUS office in YVR this week. Just wondering if there is anything I should be prepared for in terms of the interview of if it is very straight-forward. I'm a Canadian citizen living and working in the US on an H1-B VISA. Thank you in advance for any offerings or advice. |
Can someone explain the difference (pros/cons) of CANPASS Air versus NEXUS?
I've applied for CANPASS Air (since I rarely go to the US) and am waiting for my interview. I spoke to a customs officer the other day (on arrival at YYZ) and he said I should try to change from CANPASS to NEXUS but couldn't really explain why. |
NEXUS Air would give you all the functionality of CANPASS Air, plus the ability to use it for the few occasions you enter the US (whether by air or by land or by sea).
Upside: more places to use it, costs less ($50/5yr vs. $50/1yr). Downside: your information goes both to Canada and to US. This may worry you, or you may be in a position where the US will reject you for some reason. Otherwise, no reason to get CANPASS. =aw |
Really impressed
My wife filled in the online form which made the conditional approval process go really quick, ie 10 days. Got the email that her status online had changed, and was suprised that you could book an appointment online.
Booked one for the Next day in Winnipeg. For those that are wondering, having been through the process twice, it is really not an interview that you go in for, they just look at your documents you submitted, ask you some of the questions again, and then biometrically preserve you. |
Document Update
My drivers license was recently renewed, so I went to the NEXUS office at YYZ this morning to update my documents as required for the NEXUS program. When I originally applied for NEXUS, I used the paper method as I was not aware of GOES (don't think it was even available at that time).
So this morning at YYZ nexus office, they tell me that I need to change my drivers license in the GOES system, however there is no possible way for me to do that. When I log into GOES, I can only change my address. So I call the NEXUS 1-800 number. The lady there tells me I need to go to a NEXUS office to change my document. I tell her about the problems this morning (in fact about 6-7 people came into the office requesting the same thing when I was there), and she tells me that that what I was told this morning was incorrect. She takes my drivers license details down and tells me I should not have any problem. As of this minute, my drivers license update is still not showing in GOES. Anyone else have this problem, any ideas? Jay |

I was told that I needed to get my new DL scanned at any NEXUS location within 30 days of when I got my card. I did, not a problem. My suggestion is to go to another NEXUS location besides YYZ. You don't need an appointment to do so, just walk in and explain your situations. Chances are, each side will scan it and you'll be on your way in a few minutes. Good luck. |

Furthermore, I was originally told not to use GOES, as it was pointless since once you made an address change, you'd need to have your documents rescanned anyway. I'd say go back and hope for someone different. Or go to the land border office. And by the way, I just used GOES since I had to change my address again, and the site says it needs to be updated by today because they are sending out new cards (whatever - I asked about this last time I was in the office, and they had no clue). Anyhow, my permanent address was still there from when I applied, despite that I have changed it since. My mailing address was correct, but I was told my perm. was changed to. GOES definitely needs an improvement. |

That's a myth. Hoof and mouth (properly) is not fatal to livestock but it makes them unexportable and there are some health impairments. It's akin to humans contracting some disease that while not fatal may be debilitating to some degree..

Why bother with brining home dope when there's so much produced domestically?
And so you'd propose giving everyone entering Canada laxatives and make them wait until the laxatives have taken effect? You show me in Canada where one can produce Cocaine or Heroine. I agree with you that meth, extascy and pot/hash is produced here, but unfortunatly enough for some of the population, those drugs just don't do it for them. So therefore organized crime brings in the dope. I also have no idea where got the idea that I want to give everyone laxatives. There are many avenues available to CBSA officers who think someone has swallowed, including a 'drug loo' which is basically a modified toilet to sift through human waste looking for drug pellets. Watch the movie 'Maria full of grace' or something like that... it's a good rendition of how someone swallows. Subtitled though, hope that won't discourage you ;) |

Just to clarify something that I read, when they say...
Under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, the NEXUS card has been approved as an alternative to the passport for air travel into the United States for US and Canadian citizens. I might need to send my passport off to get a visa for a couple of weeks, and want to confirm that I can travel to the US and back to Canada without issue. Thanks, Greg |

I've used Nexus since I updated my license info in person in 2007 and since that visit a few weeks ago, and haven't had any problems. So I don't know what's up with the expiry date that's showing up on GOES. |

But I think...actually, I'm pretty sure, that the NEXUS rules say you must have both your card and passport at all times. The US folks at YYC and YOW recently have asked for my NEXUS card. |
