Nexus Expired: July 2018
Applied: March 3, 2020 (First renewal)
Approved: March 10, 2020 (no interview required)

It is definitely hit or miss on how long it takes. I don't travel very much (couple of flights a year, typically within Canada but occasionally to Europe), occasional car trips to the U.S. a couple of times a year, but haven't flown to a U.S. destination in years. Maybe that makes me a very low risk and so faster to process, IDK.

Welcome to FT.

Is your new expiration date July 2023 or July 2025?

My application took 222 days in total to be approved. I had sent an email asking if something is wrong and the response was due to the government shutdown and that the vetting process takes time. There is no way for them to expedite the process as stated in the email. CBP also said processing times are 7+ months.

Application July 27 2019
Approved March 6 2020 with no interview needed.

New Nexus Card?

I was approved for renewal in under a month with no interview. However, I'm not clear if I continue to use my old card or will I be mailed a new one?

You should receive a new one like I did. They have expiration dates. If I remember correctly, you have to acknowledge something on the trusted traveler site to activate after.

My experience has been in between those two observation points, more than a few days and way under seven months.

Application submitted 2nd week of Feb 2020, approval 1st week in March, total time 3.5 weeks. No interview required. This is a first renewal. Card in hand less than one week after approval notification. Now I have the bonus of ten months on top of the five year expiration life of the card.

There is a definite lack of predictability or order in the renewal applications. Perhaps it is based on the number of renewals? Are first time renewals taking longer than second, third, etc.?

Without the burden of accepting or renewing applications from New York state perhaps the process might be a little faster for the rest of us. ;)

Have been thinking about that last point. I'm not from NYS however my initial interview occured there (Champlain). There may be a home port effect in this, the renewal approval letter came out of the same location as the initial interview, and with no NYS applications being processed maybe the NYS locations have faster turnaround processing times.

Website says all public access to all enrollment centers is closed until at least 1 May.

Long time lurker first time poster. I put in for NEXUS renewal August 11th 2019, Card expiry was October 2019. Today marks 225 days /8 Months and still pending. I see that the offices are not open to the public anymore. But hopefully behind the closed doors files are still be processed. If anyone may know the answer please let me know. We'll all be able to travel again in hopefully a couple months and it sure would be nice to have my Nexus back, not put right back down to the bottom of another pile.

Hello Rod McDonough,

Welcome to flyerTalk!

Since you applied to renew your NEXUS membership before it expired, you will continue to receive NEXUS benefits, pending the final approval of your renewal application, for up to a year after the original expiration date. In your case that will be October 2020.

JadedTraveler Mar 22, 2020 1:32 pm

I noticed the CBSA website says benefits will be extended for 18 months past expiration, https://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/prog/nex...mande-eng.html

Notice: Coronavirus (COVID-19) protocols

All NEXUS interviews scheduled between March 19 and May 1, 2020, are postponed. Please log into your Trusted Traveller Program (TTP) System online account to reschedule your appointment. Interviews scheduled after May 1, 2020, may also be postponed, and the situation will be continually assessed. We acknowledge that this may be an inconvenience for some, however ensuring the safety of our staff and clients is a priority. Your understanding during this difficult time is appreciated. Please visit CBSA’s website regularly as the situation continues to evolve. NEXUS members who submitted an application for membership renewal prior to the expiry date on the card will maintain their membership and remain in active status for 18 months beyond the expiry date, and will be allowed to access NEXUS designated lanes.
The US TT website does not mention this point (12 months extended to 18 months), at least not in their headline announcement, https://www.cbp.gov/travel/trusted-traveler-programs

Trusted Traveler Programs
UPDATE - Effective March 19, 2020, out of an abundance of caution and in the interest of minimizing exposure and controlling the spread of the Novel Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) Outbreak, all CBP Trusted Traveler Program Enrollment Centers will suspend operations until at least May 1, 2020. This temporary closure includes all public access to Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, and FAST enrollment locations. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience through this process.
