There is a grace period of 12-18 months if a renewal application is pending. It is just one time no Pre or multiple times since expiration?

Well, after 10 months, my pending application finally went to conditional approval. That's the good news. The bad news is there aren't any appointments to schedule, either online or in person. So I've got ~8 months to vulture the CBP web site for one.
Has anyone noticed any patterns to the time of day when new appointments are released to the site? Or do I just need to refresh periodically, hoping to catch a cancellation? |
Assuming new appointments are being released, they will be beyond December. The only location I’ve seen appointments even being available is Fort Erie and it was for this coming December.
You may get lucky and get a last minute cancellation. Fort Erie did have one for April 11 when I randomly checked last month. Since the border is not opened to Americans, couldn’t really take advantage of it nor worth making trip north if CBSA let me in just for completing NEXUS renewal. Just have to wait for Canada to vaccinate their population so the the border can reopen. |

Old card expired in June 2021

Wow I guess the Canadians like me as much as I like them. My card doesn't expire until August but I wasn't sure if I would have to do another interview so I went ahead and applied for renewal. Applied yesterday, approved today.
They must know I never leave my house but can't wait to get a chance to go visit again soon. |

Just received this email today:,
NEXUS and FAST enrollment centres remain temporarily closed and enrollment interviews are not being conducted at this time. The enrollment centres will remain closed until the travel restrictions at the Canada-United States border are lifted. As a result, all NEXUS and FAST interviews that were previously scheduled will be cancelled, and applicants and existing members will need to reschedule interviews after the CBSA and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) resume enrollment operations. Further updates on the re-opening of the enrollment centres will be shared on the CBSA website. Existing NEXUS and FAST members who renew their membership before the expiry date on their card will be granted an extension of their membership benefits. Therefore, please renew your membership before it expires to avoid losing your privileges while your renewal is pending. Visit Current border measures and requirements for information about how COVID-19 is affecting travellers, border services, programs and business. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience through this process. Sincerely, Travellers Policy and Programs Directorate Canada Border Services Agency |

I recieved that email at 12:42 PM today. I then recieved a DHS "Status Change" email at 2:25 PM. Logged into the DHS website and found I have been approved for five more years, backdated to my original expiry date of August 2020. No interview required.

Were you conditionally approved before today?
I have been a NEXUS cardholder for 15 years. My card was set to expire in August 2020. About three weeks prior to my expiry date, I applied for renewal online. I had heard precisely zero from any NEXUS-affiliated agency until today. |
My card expired July 2020. I applied for renewal July 2019, was conditionally approved in Feb. 2020, and have waiting for appointments ever since ( 3 have been cancelled).

My card expires in June of this year (2021). I applied for renewal in February, and have been waiting for conditional approval ever since. I did notice this in the portal:
"Due to a significant increase in application volume, we are extending the grace period from 12 months to 18 months for any submitted renewal application. This means you will continue to receive full benefits for 18 months while U.S. Customs and Border Protection is finalizing your renewal application." Apparently, that means I'm now good to go until December 2022, even with the renewal pending? |
