That's what we thought, but the Canadian site is a lot more clear than CBP. Our reading was that the conditional approval meant that she was in limbo while needing the interview for renewal. Thus far just one time with missed Pre, we'll see on the flight back if it happens again. We've taken a solid year away from planes until getting vaccinated so not a large sample set to go on.

Two in a row no pre check; I'm taking that to mean the conditional approval isn't granting benefits.

The last I saw said the card was valid 730 days ( 2 years) after expiry if a new application had been submitted.

I'm not sure what my status was prior to today. I'll tell you what I know.
I have been a NEXUS cardholder for 15 years. My card was set to expire in August 2020. About three weeks prior to my expiry date, I applied for renewal online. I had heard precisely zero from any NEXUS-affiliated agency until today. |
Official wording from TTP website:
Your application for the Trusted Traveler Program has been conditionally approved. You will need to complete enrollment within 730 days of the date of conditional approval. Due to a significant increase in application volume, we are extending the grace period from 12 months to 18 months for any submitted renewal application. This means you will continue to receive full benefits for 18 months while U.S. Customs and Border Protection is finalizing your renewal application. - If you applied (first time or renewal) and is conditionally approved, You have 730 days (2 years) from the day of the approval to get your interview done. If not your app is cancelled and you start over. - If your are an existing NEXUS member and you applied to renew, you NEXUS will still work for the 18 months after the expiration. IIRC one can apply for renewal with a year of expiration, so if you applied within a year What is not clear is if you NEXUS expired, and you didn't apply for renewal and just let it lapse, do you get the 18 months grace period. But I suspect very few people care about this. If they let it expire and not renew they probably don't give a damn. |

Just received this email today:,
NEXUS and FAST enrollment centres remain temporarily closed and enrollment interviews are not being conducted at this time. The enrollment centres will remain closed until the travel restrictions at the Canada-United States border are lifted. As a result, all NEXUS and FAST interviews that were previously scheduled will be cancelled, and applicants and existing members will need to reschedule interviews after the CBSA and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) resume enrollment operations. Further updates on the re-opening of the enrollment centres will be shared on the CBSA website. Existing NEXUS and FAST members who renew their membership before the expiry date on their card will be granted an extension of their membership benefits. Therefore, please renew your membership before it expires to avoid losing your privileges while your renewal is pending. Visit Current border measures and requirements for information about how COVID-19 is affecting travellers, border services, programs and business. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience through this process. Sincerely, Travellers Policy and Programs Directorate Canada Border Services Agency |
I got my nexus card renewed in 3 days. Waiting for the card

OK so I was conditionally approved for NEXUS renewal on March 5, 2020. (Not sure why I wasn't automatically approved and required another interview...) In any case, I see that they are giving me 2 years to schedule the interview so everything should stay the same. I've had no issues until yesterday. On my flight back, TSA PreCheck did not come up. I signed into my trusted traveler dashboard and it still says "Conditionally Approved" for NEXUS but now under programs it says "EXPIRED" for NEXUS which I guess is effecting the PreCheck status. I know all of the service centers are closed at the border, so who do I contact for this? I should still have everything the same through March 5, 2022, but it seems like there is an issue. |
Update. Applied for renewal on the 9th, approved on the 10th, new card arrived on the 17th.

Ugh - I'm in "pending review" status and my expiration is June. I have several unused credit card precheck reimbursements available. I guess it's probably not possible to go ahead and ALSO apply for precheck in the meantime?

Nexus conditionally approved- pls help
I tried to renew my Nexus back in Feb 2020 but was denied bc of being a NY resident.
My Nexus expired March 28, 2021 and on April 5 I applied again (sadly, I missed out renewing by a week, I know). I'm now conditionally approved pending an interview but have some questions: 1) while conditionally approved can I use Nexus or no? 2) I am supposed to schedule an interview over the next two years but there is not ONE interview slot for the next 24 months either virtually or near me 3) can I just walk into the Blaine center (i might be going there anyway for something else soon) and do my interview? Please help! |
