To answer giamats's question above:
I applied for my renewal a few days ago and just checked the Trusted Traveler Program (TTP) Dashboard. On the front page it says:
  • Renewing before the expiration date means your membership benefits will continue uninterrupted.
  • Renewing after the expiration date means you have to wait until your renewal is finalized to take advantage of your program's benefits.
Because you did not apply for renewal prior to expiration, you'll have to use the regular lanes.

Awesome awesome - that shouldn't be an issue for the foreseeable future. Thank you! :)

Timeline on my Renewal application:

NEXUS Expiry: April 2020
Applied for Renewal: Jan 8, 2020
Conditional Approval Email: Jan 17, 2020 :)

No interview required (wahooo!) and new card is being mailed to me. I did have a new mailing address and did travel to several (7) countries so I don't think moving residences or traveling increases the likelihood for a required interview.

Side note: I figured it was worth submitting my renewal and also submit an application on behalf of my infant son so we could get back-to-back interviews. Still waiting to hear back on my infant's application. We'll see how daddy's renewal application goes as we haven't submitted his yet. It would be funny to have to drive 1.5 hours to Blaine just for our little baby's interview if Dad's application is approved without an interview as well.

The location has been moved closer to Bellingham (small moribund mall just off I-5) in the vicinity/latitude of Lynden. Save yourself 20 mins of driving.

About to renew my mother's NEXUS online.
She no longer drives and gave up her license.
Her driver's ID is listed but is expired - anyone dealt with this situation?
Will this create an issue?

I applied for my renewal in July 2019 and still waiting for my renewal to come through. My card expired today but crossed over at the Detroit Windsor border was told by the CBP officer that I can no longer use the nexus lanes due to the card being expired. Told her about what it says for use and she said that was wrong.
On my way back I asked the CSBA officer and she said yes you can use it but she recommended to only use regular lanes until I have my renewal. 🤷‍♂️

I began the renewal process last week for my Nexus which expires at the end of September. When a renewal application is approved how do they notify you? Do they send you an email or are you expected to keep checking the website?

I applied for Nexus renewal in early Sept, still waiting.

Applied for my mom and dad the last week of Dec. Dad got his approval without interview in 2 weeks time and already has his new card. Mom is still waiting, like me.

You should get an email.

and the two/two officers I have mentioned this to were not aware of the extension from 6 months out to 1 year... so I have printed off the page on the TTP site to have handy in case of additional questions.

I crossed with my family this week at Queenston/Lewiston, and didn't realize my sons card had expired earlier this month (!). I used our nexus cards, even though it wasn't a NEXUS lane. The CBP officer took his card and said we had to renew (since it was already expired not such a big deal).

Does it generally take longer to renew if you've let it expire? I applied for a renewal online right away, and the new system had all of his old membership info still.

Update on this: Applied for my son on Nov 29 2019 and received Conditional Approval on Jan 10 2020 (not bad!). Since he first got his Nexus card, he got a Canadian citizenship certificate and moved from the US to Canada, so I'm not surprised they are requiring an interview to verify documents.

Applied online for renewal Jan 20, early morning.
No major changes, expires in May
Approved today! 8 days :)
I was expecting it to take several months

It’s a one year extension, but as with when I found out GE renewal applicants were first given a one year extension with no interview appointment required to be scheduled (but still having to do the “interview” for those who got/get conditional approval status for the renewal), it was not unusual for most CBP employees to be unaware of a change (in application handling policy and practice) for quite some time. Same goes with CBP and CBSA when it comes to NEXUS.

As long as they pull up your record and begin to go through the motions, they should realize they can proceed with the application for the applicant in front of them in much the same way as before or otherwise see it’s a pending renewal application.

I experienced confusion like this on my flight from YVR to DEN. Security screening at YVR noted that my NEXUS card would expire at the end of the month and told me that once it is expired I could no longer use the NEXUS lane. I mentioned to the agent that I had a one year extension and they said that they didn't know anything about that and that they had to go by the date on the card. When I got to US customs and immigration they knew about the one year extension and said I could still use the NEXUS lane there even when my card is expired. When I mentioned the prior confusion at security screening the US customs official said they would look into it and try to coordinate with the Canadians.
