Similar situation. Applied June 30th and still pending review. My current doesn't expire until the end of March and applied during the US shutdown mess so feel like I'm low priority and stuck in limbo. I've essentially resigned to waiting until the new year. With Nexus you'll have to to call one of the joint operated sites like https://usa.immigrationvisaforms.com...erview-centers

Does it take longer for a renewal to process when a card has already expired? Do they require interviews if you've let it expire? I crossed with my family this week at Queenston/Lewiston, and didn't realize my sons card had expired earlier this month (!). I used our nexus cards, even though it wasn't a NEXUS lane. The CBP officer took his card and said we had to renew (since it was already expired not such a big deal).

Does it generally take longer to renew if you've let it expire? I applied for a renewal online right away, and the new system had all of his old membership info still.

Well here's a data point

Expired nexus applied to renew August 11. Just got renewal confirmation that
November 29. No interview despite significant changes.

Nexus will expire end of year. Applied for renewal in early July. No news
it’s my second renewal and nothing has changed in the past 10 years.
wonder if there is any logic to it???

Ouch. I realize it doesn't apply here, but did the officer even seem to know about the six-month extension for pending renewals?

Mine recently expired (judging by the way this thread is going I seem to be one of many summer applications in limbo), and this is roughly the interaction I'm afraid of even if in theory I'm supposed to be good. (I'm certainly not using it as TSA ID anymore, either, as the level of training there seems immeasurably worse.)

BTW, my experience using a NEXUS card in a regular lane, even with non-NEXUS people in the car, seems to be that we have a much faster interaction and are on our way. Definitely the preferred border ID to use even if you aren't using the NEXUS-specific privileges.

Hi, you can call one of the following Canadian Processing Centres:

As I am now at the 5 month point without change to the " Pending Review" status, I called the number this morning.
I was told that some renewals are taking up to 7 months, and that they would not look into it until 7 months
have passed from the date of the renewal application.

See my post above in mid-November. I had expired in November 2017 but was living outside the US at the time so didn't apply (should have!). I applied 1 September 2019, approved 19 November with no interview and card received on 25 November by mail. (Wouldn't you know I was in Canada at the time and driving back the next day... that time they did have a Nexus lane too!) Hope this is helpful.

Applied for renewal Dec 1, conditionally approved Dec 5, interview booked at YYC on Dec 14. No idea why everything went through so fast.

Does anybody have any insight on why a renewal interview is required? Is it based on changes of information, specific countries visited or just random luck?

fly_yag Dec 8, 2019 1:45 pm

Update. Was able to grab an interview slot this morning. Showed up 15 mins early and was out in less than five minutes with an approval. Only questions asked were to verify my address information and how I liked the program. No indication at all why I had to come in versus automatically renewing.

Timeline of event for Nexus that expired December 15th, 2019:
Applied for renewal June 27, 2019 (new address and new countries visited).
Entered Mexico December 11th, 2019.
Received Conditional approval email on December 11th after landing at the mexico airport.......
Must complete an interview.

Such a long process. I actually entered the US on December 15th the day of expiration, but the Global Entry lines were so long I just walked up to a normal counter.

I haven't booked my interview just yet. I have a trip to Ottawa in May but they're only booking Feb/March at the moment. I need to come up with a new plan.

Extending the grace period from 6 months to 1 year

New status change under my application. Seems you can officially use your expired Nexus card with full benefits while your application is in for renewal.

Due to a significant increase in application volume, we are extending the grace period from 6 months to 1 year for any submitted renewal application. This means you will continue to receive full benefits for 1 year while U.S. Customs and Border Protection is finalizing your renewal application.

No personal experience, read from other posters. Key is you have to renew before expiration date.

One poster reported not all officers are aware of this "up to six months" extension if renewal process began prior to expiration.

Grace period is now extended to 1 year after expiry IF you applied before expiration for renewal

Expired Card Question

Hello! Long time lurker - first time caller.

I wanted to ask as clarifying question because I'm a bit confused on the answers I've seen here.

If your card is expired, but you submitted the renewal prior to expiry, you can use the expired card for up to a year?

BUT

What if my card expired already? To Note: I have submitted my renewal paperwork. I would have absolutely preferred to send in my renewal prior to expiration. My card expired November 24th, but because I was in the process of fighting something in court (I won), I wanted to hold off on doing anything until I had the case closed. It is now closed (and I have the paperwork for it), and I submitted my application for renewal recently.

So: If I allowed my membership to lapse but have submitted my renewal paperwork (I'm assuming I will have to have an interview regardless), can I use my pass since they allow people to use expired passes if the renewal was submitted, or do should I just use regular lanes for the time being? OR should I bring some print outs to show that my renewal was submitted?

I don't foresee myself actually going too many times for the next couple of months so this is likely a non-issue, but my father lives in Canada and he's no spring chicken, so I wanted to just be aware of my options.

Thank you all! This forum was helpful was I initially applied/approved 5 years ago (I can't believe it's been that long!) and is extremely helpful now! :)

To answer giamats's question above:
I applied for my renewal a few days ago and just checked the Trusted Traveler Program (TTP) Dashboard. On the front page it says:
  • Renewing before the expiration date means your membership benefits will continue uninterrupted.
  • Renewing after the expiration date means you have to wait until your renewal is finalized to take advantage of your program's benefits.
Because you did not apply for renewal prior to expiration, you'll have to use the regular lanes.
