For those looking like an appointment, they have been opening slots in a rolling manner all afternoon. I was able to get a spot in a couple weeks, looks like all of Feb is now open.

My application has been pending an interview slot for 32 months, so glad to have finally gotten one for my APEC card!

US citizen data point:
Original expiry May 2021
Applied to renew in September 2020
Conditionally approved June 2021
Interviewed in Sault Ste Marie Aug 30, 2022 (by then I had a new passport, DL, addresses, travel history)

at the interview the officer suggested adding the APEC card because of my travel history, he approved it in the same visit.

Interestingly I still showed as conditionally approved until I emailed today to ask about it, a few hours later status changed to approved.

For the APEC card - did the officer ask if you were a business traveler to those countries, or was it just suggested based on travel destinations alone?

I did my renewal March 15, 2022....still in Pending Review. :( my wife's renewal only took a few weeks from application submission to getting her card in the mail.
But noticed it no longer says it was extended 18-24 months, it now says they are extending my benefits while they are finalizing my renewal application. Which could mean anything...?

It means exactly what it says, your "full benefits" are in effect while your application is in progress.

I didn't see a lot of discussion about traveling into Canada with an expired NEXUS other than some horror stories where some cards were confiscated, so I'm recording my experience at YUL for posterity.

I'm coming up on almost a year of pending approval on my renewal application with about a 6 month expired NEXUS card.
Arriving at YUL, I went to the NEXUS section for science, and was pleasantly surprised that the machine accepted my card and printed out the usual NEXUS slip.

So there you have it, the kiosk will take expired NEXUS cards, which makes me wonder what happened with the earlier confiscated cases.

Thanks for your datapoint. It’s actually been well documented policy that GE/NEXUS/PreCheck privileges remain in effect for those with a renewal application in progress.

The only reported issue is with using an expired card as a form of ID with airlines (and maybe at security screening checkpoints) especially with the former as they wouldn’t know whether a renewal is in progress or not.

I actually don’t recall reading anything about cards being confiscated. Expired cards are not confiscated as part of standard process (eg I got a drawer of old GE/NEXUS cards).

Has anyone had this happen to them?

Was in conditional approval for ages, as I reside in Canada and was trying to find a way to get to a renewal interview. (I’m talking…I applied in June-July 2019, and got conditional approval in February 2020.). I had a few interviews scheduled, but nothing panned out, for various reasons.

This past week I decided I wanted to get it done, and came across interviews for Detroit this Thursday. Scheduled it, booked airfare (haven’t done a hotel yet thankfully.

Well this morning I got an email stating there was a status update. I look at my application and it says approved. 10 minutes after the email, Nexus Bot Detroit says that there are a bunch of interviews available on Thursday and Friday.

Did someone really double check the application and approve it? Of course I have no way of getting in to contact with anyone to verify this until Tuesday, and I’m supposed to be flying on Wednesday.

IMO If it states approved on TTP website you should be good to go. You should have a link to activate card in a couple of days in TTP site (if it is not already there at this moment).

IMO It is possible they are reviewing and changing conditional approvals to no interviews required because there is precedent/data points several years ago of this happening. Obtaining NEXUS interviews have always been difficult even before Covid. I’m just surprised they haven’t done this (and allow for interviews via Zoom) sooner especially with Canadian NEXUS enrollment centres being closed for the foreseeable future.

My spouse had an renewal interview back in July. Moved from one state to another and switched employers. Not working for any sensitive industries; didn’t travel to any sensitive countries. No interaction whatsoever with any law enforcement (eg not even a parking ticket). Actually interview was just chi-chatting and taking a photo (previous was 5 years ago but yet my teenagers were approved without interview with photos on file when they were toddlers). IMO the renewal should have been rubber stamped to begin with so that CBP/CBSA can focused on interviewing more risky candidates.

Thanks! I've printed the page off from their website that shows my renewal and the blurb below it about benefits staying for the duration of the renewal as a just in case...when travelling with a friend last week who was on a expired but conditionally approved renewal (and interview scheduled the following week) was threatened with having his card confiscated at Toronto Pearson T1 Pre-Clearance because he didn't know how long the grace period extension was for his card. May have just been an agent with a God complex who was having a bad day.

But it's not well documented on the TTP site. I see a lot of articles in newspapers or whatever quoting that, but there is nothing clear on the TTP site or Homeland Security site saying what the actual extensions are. As mentioned above, i was travelling with someone last week who was threatened with having it confiscated....but PreCheck worked no problem for him and the logo was on his boarding pass. When we came home to Canada, the new white EGates worked for his expired Nexus. The border guard we chatted with after pointed out to him that his card was expired but didn't really seem to care.

Either way, thanks for the replies guys! :)

I don’t consider it true unless it appears on TTP page.

It still says 730 days at FAQ https://ttp.cbp.dhs.gov/faq?lang=en

I got approved last week and heading to Toronto on Friday. If my new card is not here by then, I'll report back on experience with expired card.

Expired card is still active and works fine until new card is activated. All the card does is to provide a pointer to signal CBSA systems (and CBP at land crossings) that there should be a NEXUS profile in their system; the profile itself is not on the card. Expiration date printed on the card is merely to reflect the expiration date on the NEXUS profile at the time of previous approval.

This is why when flying to US, the card is not needed at all by CBP (associated passport or facial recognition points to NEXUS profile).

Interviewed back in July. Drove into Canada with expired card 20 minutes after fully approved email without issue. New card arrived at home while in Canada. Crossed back into US with expired card also without any hassle.

I received my approval notification on August 9 and I'm still waiting for the new card.

CBP has been very clear about the extension of privileges, but CBSA has been very silent about it.
So yep, I've had no problems with Precheck+GE. The only thing I couldn't find clear info was entry into Canada.

The last info I saw started around here (direct link to post):

My wife's card expired in 2019 and is conditionally approved. No available interviews at all. YYZ border patrol let her go through Nexus line but confiscated her card.
