Funny you should ask. I was looking at my wife's card and her expiration date is next year. If I recall correctly, we signed up at the same time. When I pulled out my card earlier in the month, I saw the card expired 6 weeks ago.

Renewing too far in advance doesn't make sense for people who don't have foreign travel plans. If the renewal comes back with an interview required, juggling interview dates can be a hassle.

For those conditionally approved for renewal, postponing “the interview” can mean postponing membership denial and pretty close to immediate withdrawal of GE and related PreCheck benefits after the denial. In other words, there may be some benefit to postponing the final approval-seeking interview for renewal to pretty much as late as possible before even the 6 month (post-printed expiration date) extension window closes.

I don't recall a single example of someone's G.E. being revoked at the renewal interview. Frankly, it makes no sense that such a person would be allowed to keep G.E. until showing up for an interview.

CBP has decided that not all renewal applicants should get final approval for renewal without an interview and instead has conditional approval requiring an interview for some renewal applicants. And CBP has used the interview to reject some of the conditionally-approved during the interview step. |

You've said this several times now, but without posting any examples. Who would be an example of someone who is allowed to hold G.E. until expiration but then gets rejected upon renewal?

Yes, but only if one actually has travel plans. Otherwise, one needs to set an appointment within 30 days and then reschedule, perhaps multiple times, once they do have travel plans.
Currently, conditionally approved applicants have a full year to complete their enrollment interview; it is no longer required to login within 30 days to select an interview date.

That is out of date information.
Currently, conditionally approved applicants have a full year to complete their enrollment interview; it is no longer required to login within 30 days to select an interview date. The language about “Failure to schedule an interview in that timeframe will cancel your application and you will need to pay again and reapply if you still wish to be a member” really is no longer correct, and it should instead read as meaning a “failure toschedule or complete an interview in that timeframe will cancel your application and you will need to pay again and reapply if you still wish to be a member”. The CBP language was completed without considering what enrollment on arrival means to conditionally approved applicants who never schedule an interview but just use EOA within the relevant time frame. While renewal applicants with conditional approval have 365 days from conditional approval to perform the interview, there may be a need to keep in mind that the GE membership benefits (inclusive of GE’s PreCheck allowance) don’t apply for more than 6 months after the renewal applicant’s printed GE membership expiration date. |

The second and third sentences of the text you quoted are contradictory. That said, if conditionally approved renewals no longer need to schedule an interview within 30 days of notification and then possibly deal with juggling future interview dates to match travel plans, then it would make more sense to renew sooner rather than later.
