My nine-year-old self takes offense at your remark, even if his half-century older current incarnation has to bow to its logic.

In fact I was well into middle age when I first set foot in Georgia, which would have been my forty-sixth state if only I could have persuaded myself that I could legitimately count ATL as Georgia.

Exactly, my flightmemory only says 91, openflights 93. So there are 40+ missing, which I am guessing I visited by land/sea only.

Your comment made me chuckle, as it's all too true. There's the "fun" list my inner child keeps track of, and then there's the serious list that my quarter-century-older self would actually share in normal conversation with rational people. But maintaining that fun (and more inflated) list is something no one should deprive me of (and I once had a friend try to do that!).

I have a world map on my bedroom wall and the names of the countries I've been to are ringed in sharpie. Next to the names of countries I've just used an airport in (Egypt, Cape Verde and Panama) are an *

I now track my lists on my travel blog:

UN+3: http://baldpacker.com/how-many-countries-in-the-world

TCC: http://baldpacker.com/travelers-century-club-countries

Not bad considering I just turned 30 in April...

Thanks man. I like the UN+3 concept but part of me would like to add Taiwan as well (Vatican, Palestine, and Kosovo being the other 3).

In any event, it was just this year that I started learning about the disputed status of countries and the TCC list and whatnot. It has been an interesting geography lesson to say the least!

My list, which I've preemptively updated with the two other new countries I haven't yet visited but will be visiting later this week: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/12288031-post710.html

I'll post this now that my season of international travel is winding down until I visit New Zealand this October. It's been a productive six months, though, with 16 (by TCC count) new countries added since January.

Totals as of next week: 68 by UN+4 (I'm counting Taiwan--I don't care what anyone says; it's it's own country) and 78 by TCC. Can't believe that the 100 Club is actually within reach!

Next destinations: New Zealand in October and South Africa (and possibly a few surrounding countries) next March/April.

Great You, the US, Burkina Faso, Paraguay, and a handful of small islands can hang out and proclaim it to be so

If you're counting Taiwan I'm counting Transdniester...they have their own military, sooo

It's a slippery slope! (All meant in jest - no flames please)

At #162 now (if using UN+4, #161 if UN+3) after my recent trip to the South Pacific. Either way, 35 more to go. I have trips planned to 9-11 more countries through Jan 2015, that will leave me with ~25 more.
