I've my own "country" list: its based on ISO3166. So, every "somehow" political entity with a dedicated top level domain (i.e. the two letter ISO3166 code) counts as country.
http://www.davros.org/misc/iso3166.html#existing
Why? I liked there definition: everything that forms a separated territory from the "mothership" counts, i.e. Guam, Puerto Rico: YES but Wales and Scotland (sorry!): NO..
and "North Cyprus": NO (as its neither anything recognized, nor really separated (distance wise) from Cyprus nor turkey..

Not going to list them but so far I am at 118 on the Travelers Century Club list and 92 on the WorldAtlas.com (OP) list.
By the end of the year the WA total will be 93; by the end of 2014 up to 102.

I'm not a pin-in-the-map guy. (I travel for culture and person-to-person contact.) Sometime ago, I went through the Travelers' Century Club list, just because it offers a bit of current - overlaid by historical - context. I was at 220+...with no special interest in ticking off the rest. The list is really just designed to make 100 attainable.

Calgary man becomes world's most travelled
This guy does seem full of himself and seems to have a holier than thou attitude
For that reason, the Calgarian can now lay claim to the title of most extensively travelled person in human history.
“Some of the least travelled people I’ve ever met have been to 100 countries, or even as high as 170 countries — what they do is fly between major cities and especially capital cities, stop off in the airport or take a hotel for the night, and then say that they’ve ‘done’ such and such country,”

Yup. They count Dubai and Sharjah as different. They list all 7 Emirates of the UAE separately. I used to live in Dubai and going to Sharjah is NOT going to another country. I have been to all 7 Emirates but I certainly do not count it as 7 countries.

Haha, busted. I hit 100 countries last year and the way I brought it to the finish line was to visit Sharjah and Ajman on a day trip from Dubai.
