24, going by their status when I was in each country. I'd get one more, 25, going by current borders as Belarus is no longer part of the Soviet Russian empire. 26 if I go by World Cup rules, and 27 if I count the United Nations.

Counting Ireland is a bit of a stretch, but we did get out of the plane there and buy a few things at the duty free while it was refueled. I still have the toy car I accidentally shoplifted there -- my mom and dad each thought the other had paid for it.

USA
Canada
The United Nations (really stretching it here)
Mexico
France
Belgium
UK (England and Wales)
Spain
former West Germany (now Germany)
Denmark
The Netherlands
Luxembourg
Switzerland
Austria
Italy
Vatican City
Ireland (Shannon Airport)
Sweden
former Yugoslavia (now Slovenia)
former Czecholovakia (now Czech Republic)
Poland
former USSR (now Belarus and Russia)
Finland
Liechtenstein
Japan

I'd say counting airports is pushing it enough. You might as well say you've been somewhere if you've merely eaten something from there. Hence, American-Chinese food still wouldn't count...

I agree. My theory is that if you have to justify why you count the country it doesn't count.

Incidentally, the United Nations? That's just a

Yeah, I know. But I was ten years old and my big brother made a big deal about it.

As for counting Ireland for my brief sojourn at Shannon, I did at least walk around on Irish soil!

In my mind at least, soil begins outside the airport. Merely walking around on the tarmac does not count.

OK, you win. My revised count is 23. If I stretch it by using World Cup standards for the UK countries and counting current borders rather than borders in effect when I was there, I get 25.

USA
Canada
Mexico
France
Belgium
UK (England and Wales)
Spain
former West Germany (now Germany)
Denmark
The Netherlands
Luxembourg
Switzerland
Austria
Italy
Vatican City
Sweden
former Yugoslavia (now Slovenia)
former Czecholovakia (now Czech Republic)
Poland
former USSR (now Belarus and Russia)
Finland
Liechtenstein
Japan

Dubious entries which I don't include in my total:
The United Nations
Ireland (didn't leave Shannon Airport)
