WhatsApp does that too and isn't limited to iPhones as those who download the same app for Android or Blackberry can exchange messages too and get delivery confirmation.

Voxer is pretty cool too, let's you send voice msgs and sms free from anywhere over wifi

There is also Viber which is like Whatsapp, but also supports voice. Works on multiple platforms.

Exactly. Whatsapp is great. It also works for some Nokia models (Symbian).

I started using WhatsApp because I was ending up in some places where some government or another was prohibiting international roaming on my cell phone but the government control-freaks didn't have an issue with my using the internet off wi-fi or wired networks to communicate in far more secure ways than that of using GSM networks. WhatsApp ended up working out even as my iMessenger was messed up and Skype was having trouble.

+1 on Voxer. Reminds me of the old Nextel DirectConnect days!

I hate to FT app. I stopped using it almost immediately. I use the regular site or the WAP site instead.

I was looking for recommendations for a good iphone app for my trip to Thailand and China. I see some mentioned in this thread, but date was fairly old and I know they come out with new stuff by the minute :p

I want to be able to speak into and get Thi or chinese or have 'them' speak and get English.

Thanks for your help.

I have mentioned Plane Finder AR before, and now I just downloaded Ship Finder AR. I live near the beach and often wonder where a particular ship is going, etc... Now I know!

Off line French translator, iPad?

I have been looking for an iPad French translator that also works when I am off line. Any suggestions. Thanks.
I am going to France in a few weeks, and have not used my Rosetta Stone.

How does it work, just point it at the planes and it will search based on time, location, direction?

A lot of AR apps. complain about the digital compass not being calibrated and makes you do a figure 8. It's still a little off though but for things like Yelp, you can tell which business they're talking about because it's in the general direction of the tags.

Would be cool if it could read the transponder broadcast by the planes.

I know it uses the data broadcast from each aircraft, and the GPS, compass and accelerometer in your phone as well. Based on where you are (GPS) and which way you are facing (compass) and how you are tilting the phone (accelerometer) it uses the camera to identify airplanes in the air and then downloads the aircraft broadcast data to tell you which airline it is, which flight, destination, speed and altitude.

Pretty darn slick if you ask me, and I work in the airline business.

Just downloaded an app called Police Scanner+ on my iPad which was free but is now $1.99. I am using it to listen to the Arrivals and Departures frequency of my local center. I can even hear the tower frequency. Pretty cool, like having United's Channel 9 on at home.

The app is made by "Rego Apps".

There is a Free version. Doesn't say what the difference is but probably some features missing and/or ads.

Looks like you can record some feeds and email the MP3 out.
