There are professional solutions for document management out there that are vastly more secure and intelligent, but of course they cost money. No such thing as a free lunch. |
Dropbox is one of many cloud storage solutions. If iCloud works for you, or Skydrive works for you, you may not need dropbox. However, if those don't for any of the million valid reasons, or you have been with dropbox for years and don't want to start reconfiguring machines for something new, then yes, dropbox is very useful, either by itself or in conjunction with something else.
If you currently are not using it, then no it's probably not worth setting up if something else you are using is working for you. If you are like me, where I've been using dropbox for years, adding the dropbox app for access to those files was by far much easier than any other solution would have been to set up across all the machines I use it on now, in addition to icloud for some things. |
I have Dropbox installed but haven't registered.
I think you can sync files through apps which support iCloud but you're not managing different types of files by themselves. So thing like iWork docs sync and you can open those docs with apps. But for PDFs I can email and then open it on one iOS device in iBooks, to load it on that app. But the PDFs you loaded this way doesn't sync to iBooks on other devices, even if they're all logged into iCloud. I guess in that case you're storing the PDFs with the device. This is where Dropbox would only require loading in one place. Not a big deal for me as I only want to view most PDFs on my iPad than iPhone but others may prefer both options |
This http://bigtincan.com/en/ is an excellent solution for the iPad and Iphone (as well as Android). Not only can you keep docs in sync, but you can also annotate PDF's and it has a full Word editor (with track changes), Excel and PPT editor too. And you can display animated PPT's with any font set because it translates PPT into HTML 5 to display well on iOS devices. And it integrates with Sharepoint, Citrix, Google Docs, etc. Lots more too. The app is free, but if you use their cloud version you pay for an acct. Corporations use this with private servers usually.

Assuming you needn't worry about non-Mac users, is Dropbox still worth toying with? I already have SkyDrive so in addition to iCloud I am not convinced I need yet another storage solution...
In addition, I have once 'lost' all my files on iCloud (this is not something uncommon, if you look around on the Apple support forums you'll read more about it). If you use iCloud on a MacBook (or I guess an iMac as well, but I have no experience there), the iCloud files are backed up on your 'time machine' and you can get them back. More important files I save on Dropbox as well as iCloud. |
I already have SkyDrive as a second file-storing option, and having been a loyal Hotmail user for a very long time I was given 25GB storage for free. :)

Hello,
Just picked up a new iPhone 3G and have been playing around with it for a day though I am wondering what everyone's favorite applications are for their iPhone or iPod touch.
Here's my rationale. I'm being transparent that this is a piece by me: http://www.appstorechronicle.com/201...travelers.html |
My favorite travel app is TripIt. It's especially great for complex, multi leg itineraries.
Overall app awesomeness award has to go to Evernote. Don't know how I'd survive without it now. |
Love Pulse - to aggregate all of my blog and news sites into one place.
I'm also a fan of the CNBC real time app. |
