iPhone apps to track flights

Wanted to share my findings about apps to track flights:
1) Flight+ - great one, only 4$
2) FlightTrack - same functions as Flight+ actually
3) App in the air - free app, though some buggy
4) TripIT - free app, integrates with tripit - liked it

I assume you meant that TripIt integrates with FlightTrack, which is very convenient.

I just received my new iPad 3 with cellular, and I am using a prepaid sim card. I was wondering if there is an app that will selectively turn on and off the cellular data when I am in certain locations with a wifi signal. Either through GPS sensing or through identification of an approved wifi connection.

Thanks,

Thanks,

I am not sure on the Ipad 3 how this works.

On my Ipad2, the automatic default is to Wifi- only if there is not an approved wifi connection present does the system use 3G.

Did you set this somewhere?

Yeah iPhones will automatically switch from 3G to familiar Wifi networks automatically, like when you arrive at the office or at home.

But when it's an unfamiliar Wifi network, you have to obviously authenticate the first time. Then that authentication is stored and it will automatically switch you back to it.

No need to set anything. The Ipad will do this automatically once the network has been set up for connection (authenticated). I leave my Ipad set on "Ask to Join Networks"- in which case Known networks will be joined automatically.

One tip if you are roaming on data- be sure to keep roaming turned off or have a data plan which really allows free roaming- otherwise you can rack up an enormous bill without even knowing it.

Nimblebit just released (a few weeks ago) a new game that might appeal to Flyertalkers: Pocket Plane

It's a light-hearted, fun time-waster that is an interesting cross between Tiny Towers and flight simulator. Unlike Tiny Towers, Pocket Plane allows you the choice to play mindlessly if you want, or use strategy to really max out your revenue. It's surprisingly not a time-management game, so you can easily put it aside and come back later, and it's easy to play in 5-minute increments if that's all you have. In a nutshell, you buy planes and cities (airports), transport passengers and cargo from place to place. It does have the ability to play with others via Game Center, but it's just as much fun playing alone. It's a free game with in-app purchases, however Nimblebit designs all their games in such a way that if you are patient you can progress in the game and finish it without ever spending a real-life dollar.

But don't let the cute 8-bit pixellated graphics fool you - there is alot of thought designed into the game. From real-time day/night cycles to weather to special events in cities that can close down airports you'll be surprised by the details.

Ah. You beat me. I just discovered this game on Saturday and wasted all of yesterday playing it. It's definitely an addictive game. I was about to post about it just now.

It's a game of routing cargo and passengers between cities, choosing layovers, upgrading planes and airports. Too bad they don't have an option to set a regular route so you don't have to manage each plane all the time, or maybe I don't know how to do that.

I don't think that's a feature. It's a small issue at low levels of the game, but I think as we get bigger it will become an actual advantage. I can foresee that when you have jumbo jets flying long routes that take several hours, you can still play by having the puddle-jumpers doing the small city routes.

I use Flight2Cal on my iPhone 3Gs and I love it!

It easily imports my flights into my phone's calendar and saves a whole lotta typing. I grabbed it when it was free but at $0.99 it's money well spent ;)

Thanks,

AFAIK iPad or iPhone will choose a WiFi network before it will choose a cellular data connection automatically. If you don't want the possibility of a cellular data connection you'll have to go into settings and disable cellular data.
