'This is one of the most beautiful designs you've ever seen,' ...

... 'This is beyond a doubt one of the most precise and beautiful things we've ever made.'
I think Steve needs to get a life

After working with my company to design a new product and enclosure I have a certain level of sympathy for Apple. It is a quite a task to appease my small market let alone one the size of Apple's.

They do a great job and while phones are available with new features and different methods of completing a task, Apple has a smart group working for them.

Apple comes up with a very impressive phone, not to mention its own processor, and they couldn't plan on something like this?

The funniest blog of reading the live blog was when the NYT page wouldn't load, Jobs turned to someone for help, asking what to do, someone in the crowd yells "Verizon!"

Like someone said earlier, Gizmodo took the thunder away.

Also, I think there were more people expecting things like a Verizon announcement or something like that.

For me, it sure looks like a great phone. But the underlying principle is that it has to make phone calls and send/receive data. And when there's a big and ongoing problem with the carrier, it starts to overshadow all the neat stuff Jobs has done with the device.

No Verizon announcement about iPhone confirms that I will be either getting the HTC Incredible or the still-in-the-works HTC Scorpion later this year.

It is overhyped IMO. SJ claims it's a huge step up, but I have been able to do multitaking and folders by jailbreaking my existing 3GS.

For example: multitasking - Backgrounder + Circuitous

Of course, Apple bans these from their "App Store" just so they can announce these "new features" to the fanbois and make them fork over more $$ to the Evil Empire

A higher resolution display is nice, as well as an extended battery. But I don't particularly care to shoot HD video from my phone. A front-facing camera is nice, but it only works on wifi (yay for ATT). iMovies? iDon'tCare. Gyroscope? Whatever.

No matter what the device, from Apple or Microsoft, PC or mobile, is designed to handle 570 wifi base stations, thats too many for a device to process. Every blogger there had their own personal MiFi like device which blanketed that place with more wifi signals than anything could be expected to handle.

Only 11 channels (in the US) for 2.4ghz b/g/n range. They were all full.

One option could have been to set a router for Steve to use in the 'international' 12-14 channel range. But asking people to shut down is a lot easier.

If the new iPhone used the 5ghz range, there may not have been a problem. But it doesn't.

After the crowd was asked asked to turn wifi off. I'm not an apple fanboi, but I'm with Steve on this one. Want the demo or not? You can't have it both ways.

I was following 3 rumors sites at the time and all three of the live bloggers essentially said, "He's asked us to turn it off. That's not happening." I'm guessing everyone in the room said the same thing.

To me, Jobs seemed quite calm through the whole thing.

yeah, is there a reason why they wouldn't use the chips which do 5ghz as well? I know it works a bit more poorly, but since all their current routers have this option wouldn't they want to have it fully compatible?

I don't think he had much choice but remain calm. On the inside, however, I am sure heads rolled!

Not to mention that my Nokia phone has offered a front-facing camera since it was introduced what, three years ago? As usual, the Cupertino Cabal will exploit the hype machine to get the fanbois to act like ..... dare I say it? LEMMNIGS!

The innovation adoption curve is quite applicable to Apple product launches.

Apple has not played the role of an innovator in regards to launching. Certainly their R&D department innovates but they encourage masses to become early adopters of newer technology and upon product maturity Apple draws late purchasers (i.e. those recently purchasing their first 3g iPhone) to "feel" like they are part of the early majority. They begin a new launch and start over. Consumers choose their place in the cycle based on their comfort level to new technology. One of the things Apple does so well is taking newer technology, massaging it to improve UI/feel and informing the public that they are now ready to use such a product.

Doesn't every purchaser of a technology product want to feel as if they are on the cutting edge? Apple does a good job of this despite the availability of similar products.

Front facing cameras are not new but their availability on iPhone 4 means competitors must now adopt.

I think it's pretty impressive phone

Once their operating system allows for widgets and shortcuts then they could compare with Android 1.5

Because now folders are cool, since the iPhone can handle them

Also, what up with the "retina" naming, but the gyroscope would be cool, and of course, no one can compare to the App Store with the 200,000+ apps. Good luck using them in a 2GB restricted plan
