FWIW, Verizon is again rumored to offer the iPhone in January, 2011.

Link to rumor here.

One of these days the rumor is going to be true.

Well there is a little bit of swearing so it is probably nsfw.

The difference though is that the "counterpoint" video is mostly about technical minutiae, an area where each phone, each platform, has its own set of pluses and minuses.

The "I want an iPhone4" video however strikes more at the cultural and marketing aspects of the issue which I personally find much more interesting and, in this case, more humorous.

"I want and iPhone4."

"What entices you about the iPhone4?"

"It is an iPhone"

"That doesn't mean anything, it is just a brand name, they could sell you a brick and still call it an iPhone?

"Yes, but its the best phone."

"Why is that?"

"Because it is an iPhone"

"Why is that?"

"Because I can download apps to it and it has the 3G and the Wifis"

I thought this was an interesting article about a possible solution for those who are having trouble with the reception problems.

http://www.macrumors.com/2010/06/30/...mixed-results/

In summary, some are reporting that their microSIM card is touching the metal band of the antenna and possibly short circuiting the wiring.

FWIW I have had zero problems with reception in France. Maybe this problem is an AT&T thing?

It might be this: iPhone 4 signal fault leaves Apple 'stunned'

.....Users who gripped the phone on the lower left-hand side noticed the signal strength and reception fell away.

Apple says the problem relates to an error on how the signal bars are displayed, rather than the signal itself......

Best network in the Netherlands votes against the iPhone

From the rumour mills...

It appears that the best network in the Netherlands (KPN and her subsidiaries such as student-focused Hi!) has decided against offering the iPhone to its customers in the Netherlands. Currently, T-Mobile has exclusivity over the iPhone, but that ended this month. Everyone had hoped KPN would then start offering the iPhone on their network as it is, overall, much denser and their 3G network is superior. But it seems KPN and Apple disagree over certain details, especially the demands by Apple that a certain amount of profit be forked over their way.

Oh well.. Vodafone will be picking up the iPhone in any case, whose network is comparable to that of T-Mobile. And at least T-Mobile stills offers the iPhone free of charge with a 2 year contract (and their network is not bad...).

Still sucks though... seems Apple attracts bad networks. Why?

They then say that the signal display has always been optimistic in earlier iphones - so basically Apple have been lying for years.

What it doesn't explain though is why holding the phone in a certain way affects software

Despite that, I know a lot of people in Holland who have an unlocked iPhone on the KPN network. The Dutch are world-class hackers you know.

I'm guessing capacity is also an issue - AT&T was not THIS bad pre-iPhone, and all operators know just how much data the average iPhone user will generate. At some point, you need to weigh revenue against the cost of expanding your network (and annoying your customers). AT&T's name has taken a beating thanks to the iPhone, but the reward is massive amounts of new money coming their way.
