Today's Walt Mossberg column in the Wall St. Journal is a review of the iPhone 4.
He notes that "multitasking" on the iPhone actually (often) means that apps are put into a state of suspended animation, so they aren't really "running" and eating up the battery life.
To see which apps are "multitasking," you double-click on the round button. You will see 4 apps lined up across the bottom, and if you scroll them sideways you will see a lot more...in my case, 17 apps. I was able to turn a couple of them off by holding down the app until they begin to quiver, then selecting individual apps. However, most of them don't seem to want to go to sleep...like Hal from the movie 2001.

According to the release notes on the latest version of Twitter, your twitter feed will always be updating while running other apps.

try the macrumors.com forum, there will be a ringtone thread with a link to a download and ringtones in there. Then, just bring them OVER to your itunes library and they will be added to your itunes and then sync'd with your iphone. then, just select that ringtone for whatever action you want. The number of actions is somewhat limited, but incoming call, alert, sms, new message etc. can all be linked with specific ringtones.

I just downloaded OS 4.0 for my 3G. So far it's been about an hour and the progress window says it's still backing up the iPhone. Any experience out there with how long the upgrade on a 3G might take? I'll post my results when it finishes.
Edited to add: it's a 16GB phone with 3.91GB free

4 iOS for 3G
I wish apple would create a comparison chart so that 3G users know they will get before taking the plunge to upgrade.

Restoring the OS didn't take long, maybe an hour for my 3G.
But then restoring your last backup with your Apps., for me I left it going overnight because it was taking all evening and iTunes indicated which app. it was installing.
Very slow process but I had like 5-6 GB of apps.

Apple announced manufacturing "challenges" as the reason for the delay of the white ones.
Maybe you don't want to pick up one of the early batches that made it out before they realized these issues.
