Just received my iPhone 4 via FedEx. Nice to get it a day early. The activation was a breeze (took about 1 minute). I was wondering what would happen to my 3G; well, it displayed "no service" within seconds of activating the new phone. I used my work iMac to activate the phone, but I'll wait until I get home to sync apps, iTunes, etc. Set up MobileMe and my contacts/email/calendar were active within minutes.

First impressions:

It's feels a tad heavier than the 3G. It's thinner, and feels much different in your hand. The flat side and back will take a little getting used to but should feel normal with a few days of use.

The screen is amazing. Crystal clear. The camera is a vast improvement from the 3G. Someone in the office who has a 3GS says that it looks much improved from theirs. The video camera looks really nice. Could see myself using it for quick videos. Took a quick 15 second video around the office and emailed it to myself. The file size was 1.8mb and come out really nice.

Looking forward to getting it home and playing with the apps.

Any FTers out there want to perhaps do some FaceTime trials tomorrow between each other when you are the only one of your friends will have the phone, making that feature completely impractical?

I had a reserved phone at South Coast Plaza so when I arrived at 9:15am today, the line was much longer than the line for the 3GS when it arrived. I had about 3 hours to kill but decided to go home and order on line instead of waiting in that line as it was not moving at all.

A couple first-batch bugs being reported...a yellowish smear on the lower part of the screen and a reception issue when you hold the side of the phone (not apparent when using a case).

I would hold off for at least a month or two for these bugs to be corrected.

I didn't have the yellowish tint issue, but CAN recreate the reception issues.

Could of data points. I can re-create this with signal strength of between 2-4 bars. With that sort of signal, in about 20-30 seconds I can get the signal to degrade and go OFF. Even showing the rare but equally deadly GPRS DOT. Anyone seen that lately.?

IF I have FIVE bars, full signal, I CANNOT RE-CREATE it. It would appear that the phone is going into some form of searching or channel hopping (ala early nexus one) when the signal is a bit low. IF I have a five bars signal, I can hold the phone in ANY WAY POSSIBLE and do NOT lose any of the signal.

Another data point. IF I have the headphones in, the signal STAYS STRONG even on 3-4 bars. Historically there was some evidence that the headphone cord was used in the antenna, but I don’t think that was ever confirmed.

Of course, touching it with a gloved hand or through cloth, NOTHING HAPPENS.

Engadget has info from someone involved with the manufacturing process. He claims the yellow is the bonding agent not being fully evaporated. He says it will go away in a few days.

Quote: Multi-tasking is not available for 3G phones; not sure what other goodies make it worth while to upgrade to Version 4?

I wish apple would create a comparison chart so that 3G users know they will get before taking the plunge to upgrade.
Threading in Mail, Spell Check, Safari improvements autocompleting web addresses. Feels a bit faster, don't know if it really is or not. iBooks is also available, makes putting PDF's on the iPhone quite easy. Reading them however is not necessarily easy.

Got my phone from the Fifth Ave "Cube" today. I went after work at about 6 and it was still chaos. The line for no reservations wrapped around to Madison people were waiting about 2-2:30 in that line just to get inside. Then it was about another 20-30 once you were inside. Reservations line took one hour (the line I was in) from getting in the line to being complete. Luckily we were in the shade by the time I got there but it must have been just nasty mid-day here in NYC with temperatures reaching into the 90s.

I love the phone so far. I upgraded from the 3g so the speed difference is very noticeable. Especially with iOS 4 which brought my 3g to a crawl the last few days. I really like the way it feels in my hand. Though I don't like that I don't know which way I am holding it when I take it out of my pocket. I have not had any yellowing/reception issues (knock on wood). The screen does look really good, though after reading about it on blogs for the past month or so it is not the killer feature in my book, its just something that is more nice that they thought about it. Did I mention that it is fast! The cameras are decent though I was never a big phone photo taker so we will see if having a better camera changes that habit or not.

Moving onto more OS features: Multitasking is nice though still not perfect. Its a step in the right direction though as you open things it just clutters up when you double tap to go to apps. The list gets long if you never restart your phone. I like being able to put stuff in folders, especially some of the cheap/free games I have acquired over the last few years that I never really play though are fun to show off every now and then. The single email inbox is a huge plus though I think I might turn off threading as it just adds another click and I seem to have been able to keep things straight up to this point.

All-in-all I'm happy after day one.

It's DejaVu all over again
Tonight I found myself in the exact same situation I did two years ago.

No pre-reserved iPhone, but I went to the Apple store in downtown Palo Alto (California) at about 8:15pm or so, waited in line about an hour and a half and exited with the latest iPhone. Same time of day, same store, same wait in line if I recall correctly. Just took a gamble on them having phones at the end of the day, and won. Just like two years ago.

Yes, the screen is nicer, but it's the speed that impresses me most. I had the 3G (not 3GS) and it was pretty darned slow at web page rendering and even zooming in/out of text. This phone flies! The NY Times app is dramatically faster than before, loading almost instantly. Download speeds in general seem much better, even under using wi-fi, an indication that some aspects of overall speed were more hardware-bound than a result of AT&Ts supposedly slow & oversaturated network.

As far as styling goes, frankly I'm not a big fan of the glass back. Doesn't do much for me, not the look or even the texture. Other than that it's fine.

Sure enough, an iPhone 4 just arrived by express delivery. 2.5 days after I ordered it online from Orange. I will be busy this weekend.
